In 2020 most Azure services were updated to use TLS certificates from Certificate Authorities (CAs) that chain up to the DigiCert Global G2 root. However, Azure IoT Hub and Device Provisioning Service (DPS), remained on TLS certificates issued by the Baltimore CyberTrust Root. Since Azure IoT Central leverages both Azure IoT Hub and DPS, IoT Central applications are also impacted by this migration. The time has come now to switch from the Baltimore CyberTrust CA Root for Azure IoT Hub and DPS, which will migrate to the DigiCert Global G2 CA root starting on February 15, 2023, and on September 30, 2024. This change is for these services in public Azure cloud and does not impact sovereign clouds.

\n

 

\n

Why is this important? After the migration is complete, devices that don't have DigiCert Global G2 won't be able to connect to Azure IoT anymore. You must make certain your IoT devices include the DigiCert Global G2 root cert by February 15, 2023, to ensure your devices can connect after this change.

\n

 

\n

We expect that many Azure IoT customers have devices which will be impacted by this IoT service root CA update; specifically, smaller, constrained devices that specify a list of acceptable CAs.

We ask that you perform basic validation to mitigate any unforeseen impact to your IoT devices connecting to Azure IoT Hub and DPS. We are providing test environments for your convenience to verify that your devices can connect before we update these certificates in production environments.

\n

This test can be performed using one of the endpoints provided (one for IoT Hub and one for DPS).

\n

A successful TLS connection to the test environment indicates a positive result outcome – that your infrastructure and devices will work as-is and can connect with these changes. The credentials contain invalid data and are only good to establish a TLS connection, so once that happens any run time operations (e.g. sending telemetry) performed against these services will fail. This is by design since these test resources exist solely for customers to validate device TLS connectivity.

\n

Validation

We ask that you perform basic validation to mitigate any unforeseen impact to your IoT devices connecting to Azure IoT Hub and DPS. We are providing test environments for your convenience to verify that your devices can connect before we update these certificates in production environments.

\n

This test can be performed using one of the endpoints provided (one for IoT Hub and one for DPS).

\n

A successful TLS connection to the test environment indicates a positive result outcome – that your infrastructure and devices will work as-is and can connect with these changes. The credentials contain invalid data and are only good to establish a TLS connection, so once that happens any run time operations (e.g. sending telemetry) performed against these services will fail. This is by design since these test resources exist solely for customers to validate device TLS connectivity.

If the test described above with the TLS connection is not sufficient to validate your scenarios, you can request the creation of devices or enrollments for tests in special canary regions by contacting the Azure support team (see Support below).

Baltimore Migration Tool

We created a tool in the Azure portal to help you migrate your hubs from the Baltimore CyberTrust Root to the DigiCert Global G2 Root on your own schedule. We recommend the following process for migrating your hubs:

Hi rogelioaguilar, Microsoft stopped using those two certificate chains a few years ago and customers were able to either remove those certificates or let them expire. All devices that have connected with Azure over the last few years would have been using a different certificate, so it should be safe to let these two certificates expire.

Any update on this? 30th September was yesterday and as far as I can see my DPS instance is still running Baltimore certificate.

NithinIoT  Thank you for the prompt response. I appreciate the clarification.

 

The key point I think I was missing is that we have configured our devices to use symmetric keys for authentication. In this scenario, no client-side certificate should be required, correct? On our device, we are currently unable to disable the TLS/SSL certificate requirement in the device configuration. The checkbox is checked and grayed out, forcing us to install a certificate on the device.

 

We have also attempted to use self-signed certificates by adding them to the device in Azure IoT Hub and then uploading them to the device, but this process was unsuccessful.

We believe the mandatory certificate requirement, even when using symmetric keys, might be a bug or a misconfiguration in the device's software or driver.

anicolay965 that's a great set of questions! This migration was regarding the server certificate that IoT services send to the device during the TLS handshake. As the old Baltimore root CA was expiring, we updated our IoT services to use server certificates rooted from DigiCert Global G2 root CA. As a result of this change, all devices needed to trust the DigiCert Global G2 root CA, so when presented with a server certificate from the G2 certificate chain, they can trace the certificate back to a root CA that they trust. This is not to be confused with the various ways you can configure our IoT services to validate your device's identity. If you have questions on this, you should look into the TLS handshake, specifically the server cert and device cert validation steps.

In regards to \"shipping a device and having it work forever\", that is not a recommended practice. Our guidance is for customers to install multiple root CAs on every device. That way, in case one root CA unexpectedly gets distrusted, we can quickly rotate the hubs to one of the other root CAs without requiring another multi-year migration. I'm a bit late to the party on this and may be over my head, but I have some questions regarding Azure IoT Hub certificate requirements.  We're currently setting up devices that will use the Azure IoT Hub connection on an EB Pro HMI. It seems the only certificate that currently works is the DigiCert Global G2, which is valid for another 14 years.

Use below URL to check the root certificate for your IoT hub and DPS.

https://www.digicert.com/help/

Just give your IoT hub and DPS endpoint. You should be able to see which one using which root certificate.

 

If you see IoT hub migrated and DPS is not migrated then there is a script to migrate IoT hub back to Baltimore Cyber Trust Root. Then request for IoT hub root certificate migration extension till DPS is migration is planned next year.

Not sure how Microsoft has planned this migration. For us we are using Device Provisioning Service. We have migrated IoT hub to Digicert Global Root G2 but we still see our Device Provisioning Service uses Baltimore Cyber Trust Root. Currently our device is using only one certificate to connect both DPS and IoT Hub. As both are using different certificate at this moment, our device is failing to connect. Now either we have to update all my device to use two different certificate, one for DPS and another for IoT hub or to migrate Device Provisioning Service to use Digicert Global Root G2. Ideally the later one is more seamless and Microsoft should have also migrated DPS automatically or should have provided a Self-migration tool for DPS.
