Ace Aviator of the Month

October's Ace Aviator: Harris Kristanto

What is your role and title? What are your responsibilities associated with your position?

I am an Integration Developer at BidOne, where we operate a robust EDI platform running on Azure Integration Services. This platform plays a crucial role in handling transactions such as purchase orders and invoices with our customers. Being in the food service industry, the reliability of our EDI system is critical as we provide essential supplies to cafes, restaurants, and various public services, enabling them to operate smoothly.

In my role, I am responsible for the design, development, maintenance, and the deployment of new features that would improve the platform, as well as ensuring seamless onboarding of new EDI customers.

Can you provide some insights into your day-to-day activities and what a typical day in your role looks like?

A cup of coffee is essential to kick off my day, the first activity of the day would be the daily standup with my team, a brief yet crucial moment where we catch up on what we have been working on, set priorities, and chart the course for the day ahead.

I am responsible for a mix of tasks, for example, implementing improvements to our EDI platform, and if a new feature is required then I would work on a design, create a Proof Of Concept (POC) and present it to the rest of the team. Additionally, it also includes assisting with BAU (Business As Usual) support tasks and liaising with clients to ensure project progression.

What motivates and inspires you to be an active member of the Aviators/Microsoft community?

To fill in the knowledge gap within the online community, I started working with Azure Integration Services back in 2016 when the Azure Functions first became Generally Available. As a newcomer, I relied on the online community for guidance and solutions, often thinking "Why hasn't someone written something or discussed about this topic?"

It's also a way to give back to the great community which has helped me progress further in my career. I find that writing a blog is a great way to document and share your learning journey with the broader community, as there's always something that you can write about in the Azure realm.

Looking back, what advice do you wish you would have been told earlier on that you would give to individuals looking to become involved in STEM/technology?
I would say come in with an open mind, STEM is a constantly evolving field with a wide range of specialisation and technologies to explore, System Integration is just one example; find an area of focus that captivates your interest and that you'll enjoy.

Also, resist the temptation to become fixated on a single way of doing things. For example, when implementing/designing a solution, always be on the lookout for alternatives, other services, or patterns to expand your problem-solving toolkit.

Imagine you had a magic wand that could create a feature in Logic Apps. What would this feature be and why?
An alerting system tailored to the Logic Apps would be great! Currently, the Logic Apps alerting system relies on Metric Alerts from Azure Monitor to define alert rules and outputs. If we could have a dedicated Logic Apps alerting feature that directly incorporates input and output data from Logic App runs into its alerts, it would allow for more informative alerts, particularly for scenarios where unexpected failures may occur.

What are some of the most important lessons you’ve learned throughout your career that surprised you?

You need to have some goals in your career. Perhaps you're familiar with the classic job interview question "Where do you see yourself in 5 years"? sure it sounds cliché, but when I look back, this has helped me in many ways. First, it helped me set my career goal and aspiration, which is key in this industry otherwise we won't go anywhere! Second, it gives me the opportunity to realise how the industry has tons of opportunities and learning paths that we could explore.

The goal itself could be high-level, such as specialising in an area within the industry and advancing with more responsibilities over time, or even smaller immediate goals like mastering a product or tools within a specific timeframe — setting clear goals and embracing the opportunities that come along the way is a compass guiding your professional journey.

The other lesson is to reach out to the community and people in your network for assistance, I learned that most people in the field are more than willing to help, be it your colleagues or the online community. So, if you have any questions, whether it is technical or career-related, don't hesitate to arrange a conversation or catch up with these supportive contacts.
