December's Ace Aviator: Stefano Demiliani

Stefano Demiliani

Can you provide some insights into your day-to-day activities and what a typical day in your role looks like?

I spend most of my everyday time at work on designing and developing solutions that need to be fast and scalable. The group I lead is responsible to design and develop solutions with Azure and the Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central ERP platform, so during my day I spend a lot of time analyzing requirements, architecting solutions that meets customer’s needs, designing resilient and performant integrations, participating on developing the core part of the solution and on the delivery phase.

I also dedicate lots of time on doing trainings for partners on developing serverless solutions with Azure and with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.

What motivates and inspires you to be an active member of the Aviators/Microsoft community?

Since when I started my studies in computer engineering many years ago, the backend aspects of an application and the integrations between different services were the aspects that fascinated me a lot. Azure Logic Apps is for me one of the best services on Azure to create reliable integrations in the cloud and the Logic Apps Aviators community permits me to be in touch with Microsoft, to learn and share the latest improvements on the Logic Apps platform and also to be able to deliver my knowledge to the community. We’re a strong community and together we win.

Looking back, what advice do you wish you would have been told earlier on that you would give to individuals looking to become involved in STEM/technology?

When designing solutions for the enterprise world, integrating systems in a reliable and scalable way always plays a crucial role. And to be able to do that, you need to the available technologies but also to understand data and business processes. My advice are to be passionate, to be curious and eager to learn. The more you explore, the more you will discover new interests and opportunities. Focus on building a solid understanding of the basics. Connect with like-minded individuals, join communities, and participate in projects. Collaboration often leads to new insights and opportunities.

Technology is constantly changing. Be open to learning new skills and adapting to new tools and methodologies. This will be a key to emerge.

Don't be afraid to fail. Always remember that failure is a part of the learning process. Each setback is an opportunity to learn and grow.

What are some of the most important lessons you’ve learned throughout your career that surprised you?

In my career in the IT industry (more than 20 years now) one of the most important lessons I’ve learned is the value of adaptability. The technology landscape is always constantly and rapidly evolving and being open to change and willing to learn new skills has been essential during the years. This adaptability not only helped me in staying relevant but also opened up new opportunities that I might not have considered otherwise.

I've also learned the importance of networking and building relationships. Improving your skills and knowledge is not just about what you know, but also who you know.

Imagine you had a magic wand that could create a feature in Logic Apps. What would this feature be and why?

The Azure Logic Apps team is doing a wonderful job on improving the platform and the latest additions for using .NET code inside Logic Apps workflows was for me a game changer.

If I had a magic wand to create a feature in Logic Apps I would introduce an Intelligent Performance Tuning feature (yes, I’m a performance maniac :D ). This feature would leverage advanced analytics and machine learning to automatically optimize workflows for better performance. More in details, interesting feature could be:

  1. Predictive Scaling: Using historical data and predictive analytics, the feature would anticipate peak usage times and scale resources accordingly. This proactive approach would help maintain optimal performance during high-demand periods.
  1. Adaptive Learning: The feature would continuously learn from workflow executions and user feedback, improving its optimization algorithms over time. This adaptive learning capability would ensure that the performance tuning remains effective as workflows evolve. The capability will be able to suggest to workflow developers possible actions to improve their workflows.

By incorporating these capabilities, this new magical Intelligent Performance Tuning feature would empower users to achieve optimal performance in their Logic Apps workflows with minimal manual intervention. This would not only enhance efficiency but also reduce operational costs and improve overall user satisfaction.
