EDIT 2/10/2025: We have now released Exchange 2019 CU15. Please see this post for more information.

Last December, we announced that we were delaying the release of Exchange Server 2019 CU15 to January 2025 (and consequently, that the CU would be renamed to H1 2025 CU).

Today, we wanted to share what is going on, why CU15 is still not released and share some related news.

Exchange 2019 CU15 release status

We are still not ready to publicly release CU15. Indeed, this is a delay that is unexpected. There are several good reasons why we keep delaying the release:

  • Exchange 2019 CU15 is the last CU for Exchange 2019. We have committed to Exchange Server CU15 being the “code equivalent” to Exchange Subscription Edition (SE) RTM release (other than updates released in interim, as well as changed branding and EULA). Therefore, CU15 is the last chance that we have if we want to release any Exchange features before Exchange SE CU1. CU15 does include new features which added complexity to this release.
  • As a part of validation of new CU releases, we send them to customers who are enrolled into our TAP program. This is an additional validation of upcoming CUs in “real life” environments. It is through this program that we have received information of some late issues with CU15, and have taken a decision to address them and create a new CU15 build. When we create a new build, we effectively reset the testing process, which adds time to public release.

We are almost ready for the release.

Exchange 2019 CU14 is now supported on Windows Server 2025

Part of the CU15 release validation was ensuring that Exchange CU15 is ready to be installed on Windows Server 2025, so customers can build new servers, on new hardware and OS, in preparation to future in-place upgrade to Exchange SE.

We are happy to announce that both CU14 and CU15 include support for running Exchange Server 2019 on Windows Server 2025 and in organizations that use Active Directory servers that run Windows Server 2025. This means you can install either CU14 or CU15 on brand new hardware with Windows Server 2025, and then upgrade in-place to Exchange Server Subscription Edition (SE) to get the maximum supported product lifecycle out of the server. We previously mentioned that this support would come to CU15, but we also validated CU14 for this scenario to ease your migrations to the latest version of Windows Server.

The path forward

We acknowledge that CU15 delay has been frustrating. We are working to make the release ready. It is coming! Please continue working on preparing your organizations for Exchange SE, by migrating to Exchange 2019 today. Migrating today gives you time, and you should not wait for Exchange SE RTM to join the organization and move mailboxes only then.

  • We are not changing any of our already announced lifecycle dates.
  • This has no effect on the timing of the RTM release of Exchange Server SE, which is still expected in early H2 of CY25.
  • Our guidance for all customers remains the same: get to Exchange Server 2019, install the latest update, and upgrade in-place to Exchange Server SE when available.

Does this statement include the Domain/Forest Functional Level Windows Server 2025?
What about the Windows Server 2025 ntds.dit - i.e. the upgraded database?

Hello, we have Exchange 2019 CU14 on WS2022.  We have domain controllers on WS2022. We was waiting to migrate our domain controllers to WS2025. Is possible upgrade domain controllers to WS2025 with Exchange 2019 CU14 ?
      Best Regards,

Seems pretty clear to me, that it is possible to run Exchange 2019 with Domain Controllers which are using Windows Server 2025.

Do we know if full modern auth (with ADFS) support will be included in CU15 or even SE RTM? There are still some devices that don't support it.

Also, as an action pack customer my exchange license will now disappear when it expires in May. What are my alternatives if I don't want to move to EXO?

Will the prerequisites still be the same for CU15 / SE?

It seems legacy components are still required, such as Unified Communications Managed API 4.0 / Old C++ Packages. Or are these being phased away?

I don't want to install them all, only to then be able to uninstall them when CU15 / SE arrives. If I'm starting fresh on Server 2025

To make sure that in-place upgrades work without a problem AND to stay true to our promise to not make changes between E2019 CU15 and SE RTM, we will indeed not update any prerequsites until SE CU1. We will mention this in the CU15 announcement post. In sort - yes, you will still, until SE CU1, need old prerequisites that apply to Exchange 2019. We will provide information on the process of removing old prerequsites once the new ones are in place when that time comes.

So now we have to wait for the feedback of "early adopters" who will take the risk of installing CU14 on Server 2025. I doubt that CU14 is not well tested with Server 2025

Hello Nino, thanks for your work.

Can you confirm that Exchange 2019 CU14 is compatible with WS2025 Domain Controllers?

Microsoft have not updated yet the Exchange 2019 matrix compatibility. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/exchange/plan-and-deploy/supportability-matrix?view=exchserver-2019

Matrix compatibilty says WS2022 Domain controllers not WS2025.

    Hi,

Windows Server 2025 is now supported, when will the corresponding pre-requisite article be updated?

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/exchange/plan-and-deploy/prerequisites?view=exchserver-2019

And if Windows Server 2025 does not have the IIS 6 Management Console anymore:

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/get-started/removed-deprecated-features-windows-server-2025

and CU14 does have it as requirement, does that mean it is since release of CU14 not necessary and was installed without any use?

    regards

    Norbert

I am also wondering why a visual C++ version that is no longer supported, are required to be installed.
I think it should either be supported or updated to a version that is supported.

We decided to not change prerequisites before SE CU1 as it could significantly complicate in-place scenarios or cause failures. We will therefore keep the same prerequisites for CU15 / SE RTM and will, when SE CU1 arrives, provide information on how to deal with old prerequsites that came over from in-place upgrades as well as SE RTM installations.
