Your assumption is correct.
The customer has already got a Microsoft Tenant with Exchange Online mailboxes, but no server or Active Directory On-Prem.
On the new server, Windows Server 2022 get installed and a new AD forrest/domain was created.
Afterwards AAD Connect was installed and the users was merged with the UPN, so the Source is now Windows Server AD.
An "Initial" AAD Connect was executed and there are no AAD connect sync errors.
Then the Exchange Management Tools was installed.
The AD schmea version is 88 and the Exchange schema verson is 17003.
The documentation is still lacking information, how do you set up everything, when there was never a Exchange Server installed.
In this scenarion you have to add your domains to AD with "New-AcceptedDomain" (domain.com) and update the EmailAddressPolicy, after installation of the Exchange Management tools!
Then the correct attributes for proxyAddresses and mail get's populated in AD and afterwards synced to AAD.

For what do i need to run New-RemoteDomain with tenant.mail.onmicrosoft.com, when there was never a Exchange Server installed or a Hybrid setup configured?
For the existing mailboxes i still get nothing returned with "Get-RemoteMailbox".
Does anyone have an idea how to fix this one?
