I've had problems upgrading our ticketing server so ended up forwarding the e-mails from office 365 to our on-perm exchange and let the server pick up the e-mails from there. Temporary solution until my new ticketing server is completely rebuilt to make use of oauth2 properly. Least for now I'm no longer under pressure to deal with this.
Oh by the way... another gotcha coming up... Lucky the new server will be use TLS1.2 and TLS 1.3.

As announced previously, TLS1.0 and TLS1.1 are no longer supported in Office 365 as of October 2020. Customers should no longer be using TLS1.0 and TLS1.1 to connect to Exchange Online. We are preparing to remove these from the service which would result in POP3/IMAP4 clients that do not support TLS1.2 being unable to connect mailboxes. We will start to randomly fail some percentage of the request our service receives in late February 2023, and fully block TLS 1.0/1.1 connections by the end of April 2023.
