I have run in to the MTU issue numerous times over the years. What I like to do is enable icmp black hole detection (EnablePMTUBHDetect in the reg, off by default). That, combined with Path MTU Discovery (on by default), will cause your system to automatically try smaller packets if it detects full size packets are getting dropped. You will get a delay of a couple of seconds and then the connection works.
The equivalent on Linux is tcp_mtu_probing.
