Simplifying file share management and control for Azure Files
Hi Will, is there any timeline for SMB support? Or an available product roadmap?
This is exactly the kind of product I need to make a shift from traditional file shares over to Azure and SMB would seal the deal.
Hey nathan-nc,
We do intend to add SMB support to this new management model in the future, but we don't have an ETA that we're sharing yet for this. We're focused at the moment on getting to general availability support for NFS file shares. The only reason that we decided to start first with NFS is because it was easier to get started there - SMB has a lot more features to integrate with (Azure AD/Entra/AD, Azure File Sync, Azure Backup, etc.) today.
Keep in mind - we're just providing a new management model for our already existing Azure Files product. The underlying NFS protocol support for the new Microsoft.FileShares management model is the same as the one used by Microsoft.Storage and when we add support for SMB in the future, it will also be the same. My view is that if you're ready to get started with Azure Files, you shouldn't wait for the Microsoft.FileShares management model. Please feel free to reach out to mailto:AzureFiles@microsoft.com if you want to have a chat about how to do that.
Thanks,
Will Gries
