- Re: Introducing Workspaces in Edge | New featureAlex_Kaa I was able to turn it on as others have described... but the Workspaces feature only appears in Edge profiles connected to an Azure AD account, for now. In my case, the main/default Edge profile is synced with a personal Microsoft account, so no sign of Workspaces appears there at all. As soon as I open a new window with my second, 'Work', profile (without restarting the browser), Workspaces are enabled and functional in any windows belonging to that Edge profile. I tested this today with both Edge Stable (106.0.1370.52) and Edge Canary (108.0.1458.0); the results were identical in either case. One other update: once you create a workspace, you can copy a link to 'share' it with other people. As of today, it seems that using that link can result in (at least) three separate outcomes: Using that link in a version of Edge that doesn't meet the requirements for Workspaces (i.e. a 'personal' account, or with the flag turned off) just redirects to the documentation for Workspaces referenced in my earlier post. Using that link in a version of Edge with Workspaces enabled: Loads the shared workspace, but only if the linked account belongs to the same Azure AD tenant! If the linked account belongs to a different Azure AD tenant than that which shared the Workspace link, an obscure error message appears. Link details: The current documentation does not mention any restrictions on sharing outside of a tenant, but I fear that at least initially that may be the case (Teams is still trying to outgrow a similar architectural assumption). - Jim4KViews0likes1Comment
- Re: Introducing Workspaces in Edge | New featureAlienNation It looks like the use case from the former (circa 2020) preview is still valid. Please provide feedback in-app (and continue discussions here) once you get a chance to try it out! From Microsoft Edge Workspaces (Public Preview); 12 October 2022: Edge Workspace scenarios The following are key scenarios for using Edge Workspaces in your organization. ... If an individual is working on multiple projects, they can create a workspace to organize the open tabs they have for each project. Whenever they want to work on that project, they can easily open its Edge Workspace and have everything they need in one place. That page also includes a seven-minute embedded YouTube video explaining Edge Workspaces. From Getting started with Microsoft Edge Workspaces (public preview); undated: Edge Workspaces can be used both individually or as a group to help manage projects and keep websites and files in one place. For example: ... If you're working on multiple projects, you can create an Edge Workspace to organize the open tabs you have for each one. Whenever you want to work on a project, just open the project’s Edge Workspace and you’ll have all your websites and working files open in one place. The shared version of workspaces only appears to be currently available to business users, at least for now - the sharing functionality appears to be facilitated by Azure AD and the SharePoint backend of OneDrive for Business (and perhaps some Substrate stuff on the backend as well?). Enabling the feature: There appears to be a group policy setting (version 107 or later; EdgeWorkspacesEnabled) to enable this, as well as a command-line flag (#edge-workspaces). Additionally, the following url for an in-browser flag is mentioned by the first quoted page: edge://flags#edge-workspaces. The time to provide feedback and help mould this into a useful feature for the broadest possible audience is now, while it is still in development. (Once a feature makes it into the default channel, it's much harder to change things work without impacting lots of users, of course.) - Jim P.S. Don't forget about positive feedback, too!4.1KViews1like6Comments
- Re: Files On-Demand, OneDrive automatically downloads GBs of files you freed up every time after rebootHexaae This issue still exists as of 28 July 2022, on the following system: Windows: Windows 10 Version 21H2 (OS Build 19044.1826) OneDrive: Version 2022 (Build 22.141.0703.0002) (64-bit) This should be handled on two levels (I don't care which team acts first, but both changes should eventually be enacted): `CompatTelRunner.exe` should automatically exclude from its scans any files noted in the filesystem as 'placeholders' by programs such as OneDrive OneDrive should refuse to automatically download any files for `CompatTelRunner.exe`, just like it does for other automated processes such as 'Windows Defender' anti-virus scans. Related: Just as `CompatTelRunner.exe` downloads 'Files-on-Demand' `.exe` files within a OneDrive library, `WmiPrvSE.exe` is also guilty of doing this for `.msi` files. Tl;dr: Prompt action is required from both the Windows 'Application Experience' team and the OneDrive team.3.5KViews3likes0Comments
- Re: Introducing Workspaces in Edge | New featureDan_AI4GK If you'd like to play with the feature, you could try creating new browser profiles... perhaps by installing Edge in a VM. (I believe that someone previously stated that the user assignment for these 'controlled-roll-out' features gets chosen at random during/after installation?) I don't suspect that Microsoft has forgotten about this; rather, the team is likely holding it back* until they are more confident in the final form in which it will appear. Let's give them time (yes, perhaps even another year or more) to do user studies and get it right the first time. Perhaps counter-intuitively: the longer it takes to be released, the more likely it will be retained as a long-term feature. * If I were the project manager (and I'm most definately not), I wouldn't let this sort of thing get released until a) it was much more tested and polished and b) all of the other Edge fires were put out. (We're still in the midst of a pandemic, after all.) Update 2022-01-12 (since the reply / quick reply buttons are disabled for me right now, for a reason that I can't extract from DevTools): In Edge 96 or earlier, if one had launched Edge with the appropriate command-line flags and then later launched Edge using the normal icon, any workspace windows the user had created just appeared as normal windows. If Edge was closed and re-opened with the correct command-line flags, the workspace windows that were previous closed would appear and be classified by the correct workspace name/color. After the v97 update, this behavior changed, and any workspace windows that weren't actually open prior to the update appear to have been lost! These windows may return after downgrading to Edge 96... but in the meantime: if anyone has been using Workspaces and has not yet updated to v97, make sure you back up those windows before the update occurs on your PC.5.2KViews0likes1Comment
- Re: EdgeのIEモードでTabProcGrowthは機能していますか?Machine translation: Is TabProcGrowth working in IE mode in Edge? Set TabProcGrowth = 0 and When I open IE, the number of processes is one, When opened in IE mode in Edge, there are two processes. (Probably a frame process and a tab process) Are you aware that the TabProcGrowth setting is ignored in Edge's IE mode?1.7KViews0likes2Comments
- Re: Integration with OneNote 'Linked notes' feature? How do other folks take notes while reading / researching on the web? Do you... just manually copy a link into some notepad application use a browser extension use a different web browser that has built-in notetaking features use a database or wiki use a desktop app that integrates a browser view and note-taking, instead of a discrete browser such as Edge write down physical notes just rely on your memory do something else?2.9KViews1like0Comments
- Re: Spinning blue circle at random times, system unresponsive afterwardsI’ve noticed similar issues with a Surface Book 8GB that begin after the 21H2 update. _(I am still investigating this, as well as display artifacts / screen resolution dropping down to 640x480 when Edge uses too much memory.)_11KViews0likes1Comment
- Re: What is the code to run IE in Edge?GaryTr755 Two questions for you: Is your problem not being able to use your program to open a page / site in Edge using IE mode at all, or is the issue that you are using IE Mode, but Edge in IE Mode is acting differently in some way (i.e. in not allowing the tab to be closed on a timer) than IE11 does? On which release channel(s) (i.e. Public, Beta, Dev, or Canary) of Edge have you experienced this? In the meantime, the notes below may help you and others in similar situations. - Jim Microsoft is committed to minimize impacts to existing applications from IE11 to Edge: Internet Explorer mode in Microsoft Edge will be supported through at least 2029. - Re: Edit your existing headers and footers in EdgeI imagine that the App Assure[1] team is going to get more and more requests about this (and other print preview / printing issues) as the IE11 retirement date approaches [2]. - Re: Edge sync across laptopsYes, that is showing there are 0 tabs being synced in your case. (There’s a possibility that tab sync may be implemented in the ‘Beta’ or ‘Dev’ versions; I don’t have knowledge either way.) If you want to manually transfer tabs from one device to another, you can right-click on one of them and select “Save tabs to favorites” and you will be prompted to create a new Favorites folder for them. Those favorites will be synced to your other computer and then you can with a single action open that entire folder of Favorites into tabs in a new window. So indeed manual, but also semiautomatic, after a fashion. Best of luck, - Jim [I imagine proper tab synchronization is taking a while because it can involve _many_ other things besides the URL and tab order - the developers will have to figure out how to reliably synchronize (or explicitly choose not to synchronize) the many things users may expect to be preserved for _each_ tab and how to deal with conflicts: the forward/backward history stacks for each tab, scroll position, audio/video playback pause position, data entered in forms, cookies, other page data (Javascript timers, variables and ‘Local Data’ folders), etc. It’s quite the ambitious project.]2.8KViews0likes1Comment
- Re: Reading List - DiscussionOne possible way to improve this (Reading List just becoming another place for storage) would be if the 2 newest and 2 oldest entries were to optionally appear on the ‘New Tab’ page (Safari on iOS does this by occasionally offering URL bar suggestions from the user’s reading list). With the demise of ‘Set-Aside Tabs’, there isn’t a last-in, first-out (LIFO, or stack) place to bookmark individual pages. I (and I imagine many others) end up just spawning links in countless tabs for later reading. ———— <dreaming> Perhaps someday, a browser will allow one to right-click on a link and select “To review” (and/or other more arbitrary tags); before closing the browser (and/or on ‘New Tab’ pages) the user would then be presented with a message “Madam, you expressed interest in reviewing the following links:”, perhaps with each link even showing a tooltip showing from whence it came, and an option to save the links as a folder of favorites or to keep them on the list for future sessions. Perhaps also someday, favorites / bookmarks (and their associated metadata; e.g. where from, date bookmarked, etc.) will be stored in a database so the browser user could search parametrically. For example, one could quickly filter favorites/bookmarks to show: - only those I added in the last half of May - only those links I bookmarked from pages on Wikipedia - all favorites that point to *.microsoft.com/*. - all favorites that _do not_ point to a particular site / domain / TLD - all favorites added more than 2 years ago - favorites I’ve never clicked on </dreaming>2.1KViews0likes0Comments
- Re: Edge sync across laptopsI’m not sure if tab syncing is actually implemented yet in production. (I use _way_ too many tabs to risk turning that feature on!) They had the check-box for tab syncing there long ago, so that when it _was_ implemented, users who wished to opt-out wouldn’t have to return to the settings. (They probably should have had that line colored in grey or somesuch, but almost the entire public life of Edge Chromium has been during a pandemic so I’m allowing them some extra grace here.) By checking edge://sync-internals on your first machine (there should be a table in the lower-right? corner of the first tab) you should be able to see how many favorites, passwords, tabs, etc. have been uploaded. Does it show there that any tabs are even being sent to the sync server yet? That same screen, viewed from each computer, should also show you whether or not sync is done from the perspective of that browser. Finally, you can always create a new, temporary Edge user profile on either computer and sign in to check syncing with fresh settings … just remember to delete that extra profile when you’re done testing.2.8KViews0likes4Comments
- Re: Microsoft Edge Webview2 Runtime can't be uninstalled. It’s also quite possible that Microsoft had nothing (directly) to do with Webview2 being installed on your machine. It is made available to third-party developers to install with their software as needed (much like the .NET runtimes): https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/webview2/concepts/distribution This is done so third-party applications can display HTML without requiring the installation of any specific end-user standalone webbrowser. Developers are free to include other rendering libraries / frameworks in their apps instead, but by using Webview2 they get free security updates even if the parent application is never updated (e.g. the publisher goes out of business or discontinues the product). That said, running an Insider version of an un-released OS _may_ in fact come with certain components pre-installed that won’t be there by default in the release version. [As @RohitYadav mentions below, if you were to uninstall everything that depends on Webview2 then perhaps you could eliminate it from your system… but more and more applications (third-party and Microsoft) seem to be using HTML5 for parts of their actual UI, so I fear this may be a Sisyphean battle.]121KViews2likes0Comments
- Re: Edge sync across laptopsOn both machines, go to edge://sync-internals as explained here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/deployedge/microsoft-edge-troubleshoot-enterprise-sync The information there should help you start to narrow down the problem (e.g. to a computer, account, or network level). Additionally, it wouldn’t hurt to make sure both computers are updated to the same version of Edge and are signed in (for syncing purposes) to the _exact same_ account, as mentioned here: https://www.reddit.com/r/edge/comments/lnd011/edge_sync_not_working/2.9KViews0likes6Comments
- Integration with OneNote 'Linked notes' feature? Before Internet Explorer is completely retired, has there been any discussion about Edge not currently working with the "Linked Notes" feature of OneNote 2016 / 365 (on Windows)? (from the above link): Note: Another way to take linked notes is to click Dock to Desktop on the View tab in OneNote 2010. The current OneNote page will be docked to the side of the Windows desktop, where it will stay visible while you use other programs. Any notes that you take in the docked OneNote window will be linked to their context. (This external site also contains a good basic introduction.) I'm not sure if this requires engineering work from the Edge team, the OneNote team, or both. (Perhaps it might share underlying infrastructure with the 'Ink web page' feature in Edge.) - Jim P.S. There are unresolved requests for this in other channels, so it's not just me looking for this to be restored.
