Re: Announcing a new way to paste URLs, Link format!
lforbes thank you for your feedback. First, let me address your request. There is already a group policy for this. It has been in place since prior to Link format reaching the Stable channel. The policy is called ConfigureFriendlyURLFormat and the details can be found on this page https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/deployedge/microsoft-edge-policies I hope that helps. Thank you also for your feedback about the Link format and potential phishing scams. You are correct that obfuscated URLs are used by attackers in phishing scams. Mitigating that risk is important. Microsoft SmartScreen is a service that Microsoft Edge uses to help mitigate that risk, as just one example of the tools to mitigate such risks. That said, I hear your concern and when users share URLs with others, those recipients may not be using Microsoft Edge and therefore may not have the mitigations to help protect them. That is one of the reasons we provide the ability to paste as plain text, as well as the ability for users to change the default copy & paste type and for IT Admins to set the default paste type. Our work isn't done however and we will continue to assess the risks here and see what else we can do to mitigate them. Thank you again for your feedback!5.6KViews1like0CommentsRe: Announcing a new way to paste URLs, Link format!
Thanks, Adam Fowler I appreciate the suggestion of reverting the default and having a shortcut key for the new behavior as an option. Note that you can change your default paste option in Edge settings under "Share, Copy & Paste" to set it back to the full plain text URL and then use the right-click "Paste as" menu to paste as a link within Edge. I hear you though on also wanting a shortcut key for link when plain text is the default. Thanks again! Jared5.7KViews0likes0CommentsRe: Announcing a new way to paste URLs, Link format!
Thanks, ManuelGPz. I'm glad you find this to be helpful and I understand that you prefer the plain text paste method in Office desktop apps. The Ctrl + Shift + V shortcut key isn't guaranteed to work in every app. It works on most websites (though even some websites override shortcut keys). The Office desktop apps each offer their own paste menus that allow you to paste the full URL as plain text. If you would like the default paste format to behave like it used to, there is a setting you can set to make URL paste always paste the plain text URL by default (which will also set Ctrl + V back to the full plain text URL). Note, that within Edge, you can right click and use the "Paste as" menu to paste in a format other than the default (much like Ctrl + Shift + V) but again, that is only within Edge and will not necessarily work on every website. Thank you again and I hope this helps!5.7KViews0likes1CommentRe: Announcing a new way to paste URLs, Link format!
Hi Everyone, We're excited to announce that the Link format and its settings (including the "Paste as" menu and the shortcut key support) is now available in Edge Canary on MacOS. If you have a Mac, please update to the latest Canary build and give this a try. We would love to hear your feedback! Thanks, Jared on behalf of the Link format team5.7KViews0likes0CommentsRe: Announcing a new way to paste URLs, Link format!
rshupak thank you as always! I was on vacation last week and am still catching up. When I right-click on the address bar in Canary today (671), I see "Copy" not "Copy link" and the appropriate formats get added to the clipboard when copying. Can you confirm that you observe the expected behavior in Canary build 671 (or later if you see this post in the next few days)? Thank you!10KViews0likes1CommentRe: Announcing a new way to paste URLs, Link format!
Thank you, rshupak. As always, you have a very keen eye. We append the domain when it isn't included in the title text so that it's clear what the content is related to. Do you have a preference between the text in your example (with the appended domain) vs. the Link text as specified in the Link Preview Format clipboard data's JSON payload? Thanks, Jared10KViews0likes6CommentsRe: Announcing a new way to paste URLs, Link format!
Hi Everyone, I'm happy to announce that in the Canary and Dev channels, copying links within the contents of the web page now supports the Link format, much like copying URLs from the Address Bar has since Missy's original post. Please give copying and pasting links within a page a try and send us your feedback. On behalf of the team working to simplify pasting of links, thank you in advance for your feedback on in-page links! Jared11KViews0likes8CommentsRe: Announcing a new way to paste URLs, Link format!
Thank you, CSearle! We are glad you are happy with this feature! Note that some people have workflows that aren't working. There are always the folks that just dislike change, as you correctly pointed out, however we are listening carefully to those who are running into issues as well. Our goal is for everyone to be as satisfied as you are :). Thank you again for the feedback! Jared15KViews0likes0CommentsRe: Announcing a new way to paste URLs, Link format!
Thank you, dcephilpott! We've taken note of this. Note that you can use Ctrl + Shift + V or you can right-click, select "Paste as" and choose "plain text" to paste the plain text URL into Google Hangouts. If Google Hangouts is a place you paste URLs into very frequently, you can also change your default back to plain text in edge://settings/shareCopyPaste Thanks again for the feedback!15KViews1like0CommentsRe: Announcing a new way to paste URLs, Link format!
Thank you again, dannydwarren. Yes, it is dependent on the site into which you are pasting. In our testing, we found most work well, however there has been some feedback on this thread of some cases that do not work as expected. We are working to make this work well on as many sites as possible. Can you give me a bit more information about the case that didn't work well for you? What site were you trying to paste it into?15KViews0likes0CommentsRe: Announcing a new way to paste URLs, Link format!
Nico_Popy Merci! I will respond in English as my French is not the best (though I understood most of your post by reading it and the rest I was able to translate with Microsoft Translator on Bing). As Missy points out in the original post, our research showed that many users prefer a human readable link than a long URL even with a preview. However, we also found that some users really do appreciate the preview that some sites generate, as you clearly do. You are not alone :). In our testing, we have found that most sites that generate a preview image still do with the new link format. That's not 100% consistent however. Thank you for letting us know that you use Twitter and Slack and that you would appreciate previews for those sites as well, even with the new format. We of course will follow up with Twitter and Slack regarding generating previews for the new Link format and we will follow up with other sites we find either in our testing or via feedback (so please keep the feedback coming)! Finally, if you prefer the plain text format which will result in previews generated by Twitter and Slack, more often than you prefer the link format, you can always change your default back to Plain Text in edge://settings/shareCopyPaste Merci boucoup!
