Re: Why would the developer be smart enough to tamper with the settings item inside the download setting
Thanks for submitting feedback, we appreciate the care you took to describe your problem. From what I can understand, it appears that you are finding the recent change to support "Open" functionality in downloads to be inefficient. In particular, what I am hearing is that you prefer that once you click a donwload link, it asks you where you want to save the file immediately (without having to click "Save as", which requires you to perform one extra click). The feature team is keeping track of feedback of this type. We made the change because we received overwhelming feedback from people who want the previous "Open/SaveAs" functionality in legacy Edge back yet we didn't want to overcomplicate the settings associated with Downloads, which may confuse users.3.7KViews2likes0CommentsAnnouncing the Open/Save as/Save and Delete prompts for downloads!
Update: Open/SaveAs is now available on Edge Stable ( version >= 86.0.622.38) Greetings, Microsoft Edge Insiders! As a part of our top feedback, we have been looking at implementing features from Microsoft Edge legacy. One of those items is a feature asking users if they want to Open, Save As, Save, or Cancel a download. This week, we're excited to announce that this setting is now available in our Dev and Canary channels! We expect all builds with version >= 87.0.629.0 to have this feature. To enable it, navigate to edge://settings/downloads and toggle on, "Ask me what to do with each download." Once you download a file after enabling that setting, you will see options to: Open the file, which downloads it to a temporary folder and opens the file. This temporary folder will attempt to clear itself whenever you start a new browser session Save as, which opens the file explorer, allowing you to rename and choose where the file is saved Save the file, located under the ... button, which saves the file to your default downloads folder (you can also change this on the Downloads settings page) Cancel the file download entirely, this is also located under the ... button Another feature we're adding is the ability to delete downloads directly from the browser itself. If you head to the Downloads page, you can now right-click on a downloaded item (or the ... menu for the item in the download shelf/bar) and select "Delete file." Once you do this, the file will be deleted from your computer. We hope that this will help users who like to download files automatically while still keeping their downloads folder clean. We encourage you to give these changes a try! Have a suggestion on how to improve these new download features? Navigate to the browser's ... menu > Help and feedback > Send feedback to let us know your thoughts. - The Microsoft Edge Product TeamSolved68KViews31likes149CommentsRe: Provide run / open / save / save as options when downloading files - Discussion
Hello everyone, Thanks so much for all the feedback provided regarding Open/SaveAs. We are now introducing an option for users using Edge version 87.0.629.0 and above to choose, for each download, whether they want to Open, Save As, Save, or Cancel a download. To enable this option, navigate to edge://settings/downloads and enable, "Ask me what to do with each download." Once you download a file after enabling that setting, you will have the option to Open, Save As, Save, or Cancel it. If you choose to open it directly, it will be downloaded to a temporary folder. Additionally, we have exposed an option to directly delete downloaded files from your computer, in the browser so that you can easily clean up after downloading your files without leaving the browser. To learn more about these features, please check out our post.9KViews5likes1CommentRe: How do I turn off "Always open files of this type" in Edge Chromium?
happyTonakai Thanks for your feedback! In version 85.0.534 I am seeing an option to clear the setting to "Always open files of this type". We expect versions including and after 83.0.478.37 to have this change. This shows up in edge://settings/downloads100KViews1like0CommentsRe: Open Word/Excel Documents directly instead of Downloading - Undo Selection not available

Hey everyone, thanks so much for your interest in this feature and for all your feedback and ideas. We appreciate your patience while we work through improvements to the downloads experience. It is super exciting that many of you are so passionate about the experience and it’s been a pleasure reading through the thoughtful and constructive solutions proposed by this community. We are still working to plan and implement improvements to the downloads experience. Our goal is to better support all of our customers, no matter which browsers they’ve previously used and are most familiar with. We hope to roll out some improvements for you to try in the Canary channel soon. I just wanted to let you know that we are super appreciative of the interest and patience as we work to improve this feature for all of our customers.4.3KViews13likes1CommentRe: Bottom Download bar lag 4-5sec
Maan2003 Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I am the PM for downloads. It looks like you are reporting 3 problems: 1. With a large number of tabs open, downloading a file from OneDrive results in the taskbar's green progress bar to start multiple seconds before the browser's download shelf task bar starts. 2. There is a persistent backplate (mouse hover effect) on the download shelf download item that does not go away. 3. You want a delete button to exist in the download shelf download item context menu Regarding 1: I have attempted to reproduce this bug, but I was unsuccessful. I have >60 unique tabs, downloaded a 60mb file from OneDrive. The green taskbar progress bar started within 1 second of the download shelf progress bar. My memory usage is 11GB out of 16GB available. If you have any further information on how to reproduce this, please let us know! Regarding 2: Thanks for finding this bug. I was able to reproduce this and have filed a bug for our engineers to fix! As a temporary workaround, open the file by clicking the "Open file" link (which avoids the hover effect from triggering and getting stuck in this state). Regarding 3: We would love to track your feature request. The way we track these is through the "Send feedback" feature on the top-right of the browser (generally 3rd button from the right). Deleted thanks for making me aware of this post!1.5KViews2likes1CommentRe: Provide run / open / save / save as options when downloading files - Discussion
Thanks for the thoughtful replies everyone. I am the PM for downloads who wrote the copy for Elliot Kirk 's post on this thread. It seems that (1) and (2) resonated most with people so far. With (3), I am speaking specifically about the current download experience, where all you need to do is click the link and the download starts. Spartan's model requires an additional user interaction (clicking on Run/Save/Save as). Is there any concern that if we adopt Spartan's model, there is an additional barrier to access your downloads? Instead of 1 click, it requires 2 clicks for each download to be saved to your computer if we take Spartan's Run/Save/Save as modal for each download.21KViews1like3CommentsRe: ClickOnce application downloads instead of directly opening the app
CodeDJ , thanks for the feedback! We would definitely need to think through some interesting security implications here (it would be analagous to setting "Always run executables" for downloads). Vidmo , sorry I couldn't get back to you earlier; it looks like you were able to answer your question. We do not currently have plans to enable ClickOnce for ALL users, but you currently should have access to group policy to ensure that your organization has ClickOnce turned on by default if necessary. The policy is described here https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/DeployEdge/microsoft-edge-policies#clickonceenable aclowe , please take a look at https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/DeployEdge/microsoft-edge-policies#clickonceenabled for the group policy to support exactly what you mentioned As Eric mentioned, we will be looking into the vsto bug! Thanks everyone for your feedback!19KViews0likes4CommentsRe: ClickOnce application downloads instead of directly opening the app
CodeDJ Just updating this thread to say that ClickOnce support is now in Canary (79.0.283.0). Users may opt into using ClickOnce by heading to the about:flags page and looking for "#edge-click-once". More information on this is available here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/DeployEdge/edge-learn-more-co-di?branch=pr-en-us-105 Thanks everyone for your patience!42KViews2likes24CommentsRe: [Fixed] Edge Canary Shows "Downloads are managed by your organization"
Thanks for following up, Deleted ! The downloads team has been working hard trying to get ClickOnce to work, so we have not had a chance to bugfix this, but please stay tuned! Please continue to follow up if you still keep seeing this as a problem after a while!4.3KViews1like0CommentsRe: [Fixed] Edge Canary Shows "Downloads are managed by your organization"
Deleted as an update, we have been able to reproduce this problem. We believe that when users enable "Ask where to save each file before downloading", the banner will show. This is a bug and the development team has been notified of this. A temporary workaround will be to disable this option if the banner is disruptive to you.4.4KViews1like5CommentsRe: ClickOnce application downloads instead of directly opening the app
aclowe Thanks for the feedback, it definitely helps that we can show customer need when prioritizing our features. Engineering work is still being put into this feature, so it is definitely still a priority! Will keep people updated via this thread!42KViews1like0CommentsRe: [Fixed] Edge Canary Shows "Downloads are managed by your organization"
Deleted Thanks for the information! We have filed a bug to look into this. If you could create a ticket via https://microsoftedgesupport.microsoft.com, it could help us more easily reach out to you if we have any questions! Thanks!4.6KViews1like4CommentsRe: [Fixed] Edge Canary Shows "Downloads are managed by your organization"
Deleted , If you close your Downloads tab, open a new tab, and navigate to about:downloads, do you still see that banner on top? Did you at some point have any policies set through Windows' Local Group Policy Editor? Thanks!4.6KViews0likes6Comments
