Re: Numbering and bullets in Word docs keep disappearing
Thank you. Yes, I used Shauna Kelly's article to set up my auto-numbered styles (lists and paragraph styles). This problem does not occur when I bring documents down and work on them locally. And it happens inconsistently. In other words, some documents are problematic, while others are not. Sounds like it's just one of the headaches we will have to deal with. I've learned to tell my team not to worry about it and not to try to "fix" it. I wait until everyone is out of the doc, then use the organizer to reimport the problematic list and paragraph styles. It does result in extra work, especially when a new contributor joins a project and does something like type over many fields because they think the information is missing. Then I get to go back and reinsert the fields or rebuild cross-references, etc. To clarify, this happens for all dynamic items, such as figure and table caption numbers, cross-references, doc property fields, and auto-numbered elements. Thanks for you response.917Views1like0CommentsRe: Numbering and bullets in Word docs keep disappearing
This has something to do with SharePoint and multiple authors. I have a lot of variables since we have Mac and PC users. All my styles are set properly, that is I use list styles with paragraph styles mapped to each level of the list. This issue does not occur when I'm in the document alone or if I'm working on a document that is local. However, when several people edit the document at once, I see all the sorts of issues. Stuff like cross-references, doc property fields, figure numbers, and table numbers disappear. An update (Ctrl+A, F9) brings them back, but then they disappear again. Also, I sometimes see list styles go wonky, like Word has decided to remap my paragraph styles to different list styles. For example, bullets may become numbers or Notes (an autonumbered style that returns "Notes" suddenly returns the numbering for Appendixes (Appendix A, Appendix B, etc.). If I try to fix these issues while folks are in the document, the wonkiness increases. If I ask everyone to get out of the document, I can import the offending styles via the organizer and the fix lasts longer. To deal with all these issues, I've changed my process. When the document is done, I bring it down locally to repair any outstanding style or field issues before I produce output (PDFs).59Views2likes2CommentsRe: Numbering and bullets in Word docs keep disappearing
I appreciate your help. I've set up my paragraph, list, and table styles as you described. I've used these templates without these issues for 10 years. The problem described didn't start happening until we began collaborative editing via SharePoint. Also, these problems do not occur when one person is in the file even though the file is on SharePoint. They only happen when multiple people are in the file. This seems to be an issue with the way Word integrates the various changes multiple users make. They are corrected by reapplying the template but the fix does not stick, meaning the problems recur. Note: we use the desktop app, not the browser.1.3KViews0likes0CommentsRe: Numbering and bullets in Word docs keep disappearing
AndrewB_33334 I have the same issues. Some documents give me grief and others do not. I've noticed: Paragraph styles that suddenly act like they are mapped to a different list style. For example, my bullets will suddenly return my appendix auto-numbering. List styles will disappear altogether. Figure numbers and cross-references will disappear but can be displayed with an F9, only to disappear again. As you've pointed out, reapplying the template fixes the problems, but I've discovered doing that when there are multiple people in the doc makes the doc increasingly unstable. I wait until everyone is out and then I update the styles based on the template. I do not have an answer. I am very frustrated by this and wonder if our clients encounter these issues when they look at the Word docs we send them. We have some that require source and not PDF.2.4KViews0likes20Comments
