Teams dependency on Exchange Online?

We're looking to replace HipChat with Teams for one of our divisions but we're not using EXO but Exchange on-premise. I'd like to get some feedback regarding the dependencies Teams has with EXO and potential pitfalls.

 

For example the site collection that gets provisioned with each team is a O365 group-connected teamsite right? However, permissions management is not dependent on users having an EXO license as far as I'm aware.

 

Would there be any objections from your side in our scenario?

Hi,

 

You can use Microsoft Teams without Exchange Online but you won't be able to use all features.

You should start with setting up an synchronization of your active directory and setup an Exchange Hybrid, but you don't need to move mailboxes to Exchange Online.

 

You will probably buy some kind of license package to get Teams and then you will get licences for other components too. If you are not planning to use Teams free edition.

It can absolutely work with Exchange On Premise however as it states, for the full Microsoft Teams experience, every user should be enabled for Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, and Office 365 Group creation. Because of this I would recommend a migration to Exchange Online.

FYI also, Codingwith.net, as stated on their website, is now offering a 'fully automated, end-to-end solution for migrating Hipchat to MS Teams'

I would recommend reaching out to them as they say that they are in the process of updating their site with more information (I.e. pricing).

We're using Teams and the rest of Office 365 with on premise Exchange. So far, the only things we've seen:

 

No meetings tab in Teams, so can't schedule meetings. However, we do have a 'new Team Meeting' in Outlook so we can still do meetings that way

 

Planner - the comments on tasks theoretically go to the group mailbox. Since we don't have EXO set up haven't a clue where they actually do go, and we don't get notifications when someone comments on a planner task.

 

Microsoft To-Do doesn't work if you don't have Exchange Online

 

Flow - can't use the Outlook triggers or actions. However, you can use the generic Mail action from PowerApps to send emails

 

SharePoint Online - the left nav of a site collection has a 'Conversation' link but it gives an error. 

 

The eDiscovery and other security/discovery features don't work without Exchange Online. Can't use hold on a mailbox

Seems about right! I do believe creating connectors is a limitation as well!
Syncing users to AAD and using exchange 2016 CU3 will give you the meetings tab though

That's the weird thing. Yes, we've got sync working, and have exchange 2016 CU3. No meetings tab. Haven't had the energy to talk to the Exchange person to figure out why :)

There must be another setting we're missing...

Thanks so much for your insight everyone. We're are already eligible to use Teams through our E3 license. So I always though EXO was mandatory but it seems that most of the features we could live without.

I've already noticed that in SPO the left nav of a site collection has a 'Conversation' link but it gives an error. 

Migrating to EXO is unfortunately not an option in the near future.

Would Teams/Channel email addresses be dependent on whether EXO is available or not? 

 

I note that Teams/Channel email addresses has a setting in Teams admin to have it switched off, but to enable it, would it require EXO? (We have Exchange On Premise atm)

Hi,

 

Yes, I should work since Teams will use Exchange Online for Teams even if your user mailbox is located on-prem, so you should be able to get an channel email address.

 

But you should really set up an Hybrid for you Exchange On-Prem so your users can use all features in Teams. For the Hybrid your On-Prem Exchange have to be minimum Exchange 2016 CU3.

@Robin Nilsson could you fix this in the meantime? We also have Exchange onprem (2016 CU11) and don't the see meeting tab as well.

@Mario Grdiša In https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftteams/exchange-teams-interact it further says "For Exchange on-premises, you must configure the new Exchange OAuth authentication protocol as described in Configure OAuth authentication between Exchange and Exchange Online organizations.". I think this is what you need to do to plan/see Meetings inside of Microsoft Teams, when you have Exchange 2016 CU3+ Onpremises.

@Mario Grdiša We are just synced to AAD. No hybrid, and we haven't set up the OAuth that Michael mentioned. With all of our other large projects this year it's going to be difficult to go hybrid. Though I keep adding to our 'we can't do this without hybrid or full online'... like the new Planner/Todo integration.

Yes sorry I was talking about the Calender Tab in Teams in the whole thread not about the Button in Outlook. Yes you can get the button even with EX2010.
