We are happy to announce public preview release of Database Migration Assessment for Oracle (DMAO) for Azure Data Studio. This new extension will help customers and partners to fast-track Oracle to SQL migration assessment and efficiently plan and execute the heterogenous migration.

A modernization journey is often triggered by a need – imminent data center exit, business opportunity to modernize and scale through cloud, license expiration, hardware / contract renewal etc.

A typical migration journey goes through an iterative and incremental cycle. It starts with the Discovery, followed by Assessment, Conversion and Migrate. At the early stages of Oracle to Azure migration, a detailed assessment helps to understand the complexity and feasibility of migrating the Oracle workload to SQL and a high-level project planning for modernization and migration to Azure cloud.

Key Capabilities in Database Migration Assessment for Oracle

  • A singular pane to perform end to end assessment from Azure Data Studio
  • The assessment module collects the Oracle schema and its associated objects and other various parameters - DB size, features etc. to provide the schema workload categorization in a scale from Simple to Complex and re-architecture.  This helps to prioritize the workload for Oracle to SQL and improve efficiency in the migration delivery and execution.
  • A high-level estimates of resource hours required to perform the Oracle to SQL schema conversion
  •  One of the key challenges is how to size the Azure SQL target. The extension not only collects DB configuration information but also various other performance data wherever available to provide a recommended SQL target, its sizing and the suitable service tier for the assessed Oracle workload.
  • Usually, an Oracle instance has many database or server features that are enabled. The common ones are related to security, performance, administration etc.  To maintain such capability native to SQL, there may be simple to fairly intense capabilities migration effort that needs to be performed. This extension provides a key mapping matrix and a migration effort in a scale of (0-5) where 0 means not applicable or not available and 1-5 represents scale from easy to complex effort.
  • Running multiple assessments and viewing for future use has been made easy by providing the download report option. You can either download a consolidated report or an individual target report.
