I am unable to create a new free teams org as it says we already have one, even though our domain doesn't have one, is there a way to check against our domain who is the admin or if it has indeed been created?

When an org team is created all global admins become owners!

Thanks Adam, we don't have O365, so we just have normal microsoft account and wanted to create a free version of teams to use?

I may have misunderstood your question though! Are you a user wanting to know who is the 365 admin?

No sorry, I am just a user with a personal microsoft account that wants to create a new free teams, but is unable, as it says its already been created

This is trhe error when I try and login to teams.microsoft.com

Someone has already set up Teams for your organisation

Ask your admin to get you started with Teams, or set up another org in Teams using a different email address.

Are you already a guest of another office 365 tenant? I've seen this keep a free Teams from popping up. Also if your e-mail domain has ever been registered with a test tenant or previously part of Office 365 before it would prevent you from creating free teams as well, even if you don't have one now, if anyone in the past has setup or verified the e-mail domain you would be restricted.
I definitely did :) sorry!! I was mumbling on about org teams which is something totally different :)
On your question it’s hard to know your current situation! There are tools you can check if the domain is available in office 365 or not!
Don't think we ever did against that domain so don't know where its coming from, is there a way to check
Yes exactly! And the one had to have admin access to that domain name as well so I guess you should talk to IT to start with and find out who manages that domain! Or do a Whois :) Also what @Chris said about the guest in other tenant stuff!!
Thanks, we were a small company but now dissolved so its just me as director, so no IT staff. I wanted to setup a free teams for me to use with prospective clients... :(
that's just tenant names thou, not going to really tell if you had a domain registered on another tenant since you can have multiple domains on a tenant.
Yes, sorry! Was just about to post that! It’s just the onmicrosoft.com, not the custom domain
you@[domain].onmicrosoft.com
Not available
https://[domain].sharepoint.com

Yeah it can be problematic, having this tied to azure AD has made Free Teams a pain in the butt compared to other similar products that use their own identity service for just one product.

Curious, if you go to Teams.microsoft.com and try signing in what happens?
Is there a way for our domain to figure out which email is admin at least? We def didn't have a O365, but think what @Chris said is true, somebody must have used their email for another tenant or something
I use my "personal" Microsoft account for our domain, and then it gives me the error above, becausde before I used the invite screen and added my email
Also what happens if you try to login with portal.office.com? assuming you don't get the whole "Chose work or personal account" prompt when trying to log in?
If it shows not available here that means someone set up a tenant with the domain name as a name! It does not prove that someone added the domain itself to the tenant!
Can login to microsoft account/outlook, but can't get into portal.office.com, it wants me to authenticate again and if I put my details in, it says my passwortd is wrong
Do you guys host your own e-mail or is it through godaddy or something?
We used zyrehost but that expired, I used crazy domains now
It would seem there is some other "work/school" account against my email because when I try and log into portal.office.com it wants me to authenticate, but my own personal other email says "This doesn't look like a work or school email. You can't sign in here with a personal account. Use your work or school account instead.", which would be correct.
That’s expected behavior for not having a 365 account. It really is seeming like your domain is somehow in 365. It could have been previous hosting provider could have used it or who knows what. The problem is without a 365 account it’s hard to get support for this. If you message me your domain I’ll see if i can forward it on to someone that might be able to help out tomorrow.
So a quick easy way to tell if someone has your domain registered for login, type in dummy@yourdomain.com and if you get a password prompt then it is, if you don't then it's not and you'll get "We couldn't find an account with that username. Try another, or get a new Microsoft account."
Thanks trying to reset the account for one admin one, but it says self service password reset not available, what do you do then?
I think the only thing you might be able to do is sign up for another 365 and add your domain to it and run through the verification process to take it over, however, this is just theory. You really can't do anything unless you know the local onmicrosoft.com admin login that is on the tenant that has your domain or know another admin account on it. You could try finding a way to contact 365 support but don't think they can help do much there. Your domain verification method might be the only way.
