We have just set up a Team site for our IT Department using our fairly new Office 365 environment.  Today our telephone list was updated in Word and e-mailed.  I took the opportunity to include the document as a new tab in our Team workspace.  One of our team members tried to Edit the file (using the Edit button) and cannot get Word Online to open or edit the document and my suspicion is that he does not have edit permissions for the file.  Where in the O365 world where I go to make sure he has read/write permissions for not only this file, but the folder itself?  I did also just make him a team site Admin, but I do not want to do that with everyone, but everyone should have the permissions to read/write files.

EDIT:  I even just tried myself to edit the file using Teams and I get a "bad request"

Thanks for the information

If the user is a member of the Team, he should be able to open the file with Word Online and Word Desktop with no problems!

Hello, I just tried to reproduce the problem, but as was expected, I am able to edit a newly uploaded Word doc directly within the Teams app, and with Word Online. If you sign out of Teams and back in, do you still experience the problem? Also, can you reproduce the problem with another Word document? What about by creating a Word document within Teams, making it a Tab, and then trying to Edit? Have you tried downloading a local copy of the Word doc, deleting the file from Teams, and then re-uploading to see if the issue persists? As was mentioned in another reply already, permissions should not be the issue, and a "Bad Request" error doesn't really suggest permissions as the culprit either...

Solution

I had this same issue and was able to resolve it by changing the "read only recommended" setting on the file it self, then reuploading.

You can access this setting in word by File->Save as->More Options (under where you select extension) ->Tools (by save icon) -> General Options -> read only recommended

Once I deselected the Read Only I was able to access the file and no longer got the "bad request" error.

this is helpful :)

I had this same issue in couple of files (Excel and Word). What worked for me was changing file types from .doc to .docx and .xls to .xlsx (Save as) and then re-uploaded. My quess is that this problem only occurs with older files.

I have the same issue but randomly on several users. I check the configuration of the file and the "read only recommended" is already deselected. Do you have any others clues ?

I had this same issue during a live demo presentation. I had to go and add everyone as owner on the SharePoint site in order for anyone to be able to access a file or upload a document, Excel, PowerPoint, etc...

This was very concerning as we are going to be deploying Teams Only mode next week.
