Known issue with importing updates from the Microsoft Update Catalog on WSUS 10.0 (Windows Server 20

Microsoft

We are currently working on a known issue with importing updates on WSUS 10.0 (Windows Server 2016) from the Microsoft Update Catalog, which fails with the following error: “This update cannot be imported into Windows Server Update Service, because it is not compatible with your version of WSUS”. (see image)

We are aware of the issue and presently working on a fix. In the meantime, the following workarounds can be used to unblock your deployment:

  • After clicking on the “Import Updates…” option in the WSUS console, an Internet Explorer window will open on the following URL: http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/...  &Protocol=1.20
  • Before proceeding with importing the updates, change the “1.20” protocol value in the URL to the previous protocol value “1.8”. The URL should look like this when you’re done: http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/...  &Protocol=1.8

Changing the protocol gets rid of the wrong version error and allows me to attempt to download the update.  However, every update fails to download with an error.

How do I download an Update into a Windows Server 2016 WSUS server.

This has been broken for 5 months. Seriously?

Hi Bruce,

these 2 issues shouldn't be related, please open a support case to investigate the download issue or open a thread here: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home?forum=winserverwsus

Thanks,

Andrei

Solution

This issue has been fixed (sorry for German, but as you can see no more warning is displayed):

Hi @Andrei how does this issue and fix relate to this article is this still up-to-date?
https://sw-euc.com/2020/08/27/you-need-to-lower-the-tls-security-to-manually-import-updates-in-wsus/

From my gut it seems outdated?

we have enabled TLS 1.2 on IE Settings, .net 3.x and .net 4.x and Powershell 5.1 however we are seeing an abrupt issue to WSUS on Server 2019 is failing to download any updates from Microsoft Servers, since the 29.10. Which was after our patchday in October 2020
I do not think it is the same issue. Keep watch, the issues might go away soon, I'm sure someone else might have already reported this.

Wrote this brief how-to for importing updates the GUI way as previously one had to change the default app to IE to make this work.
