We are excited to announce two new features that will greatly improve the .NET Framework update experience for users on Windows 11, version 22H2. Your device will experience fewer reboots, and you will have more control over optional .NET Framework updates.

Experience fewer reboots when moving to Windows 11, version 22H2

We've integrated .NET Framework updates into the Unified Update Platform or UUP-based feature update. Moving to Windows 11, version 22H2 via Windows Update will now automatically help secure your device with the latest .NET Framework updates. You'll now experience one less reboot! Moreover, enable Dynamic Update and experience this improvement of media-based feature updates.

Note: Before this improvement, when you installed the latest OS feature update via Windows Update, .NET Framework updates would not automatically get installed. Your device had to restart to apply the feature update first. Then it would scan against Windows Update to detect and install .NET Framework updates. This used to require another reboot.

The next time you upgrade, .NET will be updated with one less reboot! Read more about this improvement, first announced here: Faster. Smaller. Windows 11, version 22H2 update fundamentals.

Have better control over optional updates

Another experience we are excited to announce is how optional, or preview, .NET Framework updates are offered. You will now find upcoming optional .NET Framework updates for Windows 11, version 22H2 on the Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates page. Control what optional updates you want to install by visiting the Optional updates page and picking them from a list.

Before this change, you may have checked for updates by clicking "Check for updates" button on the Settings > Windows Update page. This would automatically install preview .NET Framework updates and cause your device to restart. With this improvement, have better visibility into and control over adopting the latest optional preview .NET Framework updates.

All you have to do is get the January 26th (KB5022360) or latest Windows update for this new optional update experience. Note: Optional .NET Framework updates are not released every month. Please wait for the next one to try the new experience!

After 2 years and 4 months of bundling the .NET update with Insider Preview builds, nice to see it finally reach a production build

  • That's good to hear. If I may ask another thing in this regard anton_fontanov. When WU offers a new release (Windows Insider or public, .net updates will show up and install at the same time with upgrades. This is quite unfortunate as .net CU update requires a restart and any progress to the release update will vanish after restarting and applying the .net.

request: if WU is downloading a Windows release update (not CUs), .net Updates should not be installed at the same time.

I'd rather have this on all current Windows Server versions. I'm tired of having .NET Preview Updates installed in production servers without any way to stop it.
