As a follow up to our previous post on VMware and Hyper-V Working Together,  VMware has released a version of VMware Workstation that works with the Windows Hypervisor Platform (WHP). This release adds support for VMware Workstation running side by side with Microsoft’s virtualization based offerings.  For a full write up on the changes VMware made and the details on the version required check out their excellent post here.

In Windows 10, we introduced a number of features that utilize the Windows Hypervisior. These include security enhancements like Windows Defender Credential Guard, Windows Defender Application Guard, and Virtualization Based Security as well as developer features like Windows Containers and WSL 2. Prior to the WHP integration, these features needed to be disabled before Workstation was able to launch. Post integration, end users are now able to take advantage of these features and use Workstation!

A big thank you and congratulations go out to the engineering teams of both companies that made this possible.  This milestone was reached through their hard work and dedication and I’m excited to see the results of this effort being released to the world!

I understand that this functions only with v2004 or later versions of Windows 10.  Will this funcitonality be made available for Win 10 v1909?  As a corporate customer, we don't utilize the Spring updates as they don't have the support life needed for a large company.  This functionality is holding up part of the Windows 10 migration, so I am wondering if v1909 will get this update.

  • RickS2020 We constantly evaluate whether to backport changes or not.  At this time, due to the significant work that went in to support this config, we currently do not have plans to backport to v1909.  I've noted your feedback though and will track it as a +1 for the change.

Recently, after I updated to win11, the problem reappeared. Only by closing Hyper-v can the VMware virtual machine be successfully closed. Win10 before the update did not have this problem.

  • I have a problem with WIN 11 Home and the VMWare Workstation when i start a virtual machine, my laptop collapse and the screen green show me a message and windows system reload.
