Re: Discussion: Edge displays in an unexpected language
For me the unexpected behaviour is from the MS Translator. I can read natively in some languages (so I have set it to never translate those), in some not at all (then I am happy enough to set it to automatically translate), but there are some languages in between: I basically read them, but I sometimes need help with more difficult texts and would like to have the option to translate. However, currently if I choose not to translate a particular language, this hides the translate button for that language and there is no way for me to translate the page. If I don't choose this option, then every time a page in this language appears I have an annoying requester asking me if I want to translate it. Given that I live in a country when I half-speak the language, this affects 30% of my browsing. Maybe the nice middle ground would be to only hide the translate button on when the web page language that matches the UI display language, since that's the target language in any case, and not offer a translation requester for those languages in the Preferred languages list, but still keep the button there for manual translation?39KViews3likes0CommentsRe: Roadmap for PDF reader in Microsoft Edge
vygadeka Great job on the smooth scrolling and table of contents features. A couple of requests from a research scientist (lots of longish scientific PDFs to read/annotate). 2 page side view is key for us (I know it's on the roadmap. Thanks!). back/forward buttons to navigate internal hyperlinks. Usual use-case: a hyperlink reference in the text which takes you to the bibliography in the back. There is now no way to go back to the position of the original link short of searchign the text. Saving of position of last view when you go back to the document, at least inside of the same session Currently: if you click on an external hyperlink and you go back, you lose your position inside the PDF.4.7KViews3likes0CommentsWebsite as Application: Launching form start menu should not open second instance
For most (admittedly not all) Windows applications, launching from the start menu when an instance is open already moves focus to the open app. When a website is installed as an app (e.g. Twitter), this is not the case. Launching from the start menu always starts a new instance. While this may be desirable for e.g. Word, where the user might want to start a new document, for most websites it is unlikely to make sense.706Views4likes2CommentsExtensions Sync Enable/Disable per Machine
Hi The extensions have started syncing between my machines (which is great), but I actually want to have slightly different configs for some extensions between the machines, but sync the others. Is this possible? For example, I would like to sync all extensions, but keep 1password disabled on one machine and instead have 1passwordX running. The sync engine has downloaded both extensions to all machines (that's fine), but if I flip the switch to disable it on one, it gets disabled everywhere, which is not what I want. Some way of keeping the extension Enabled/Disabled status local to the machine, but keeping the syncing going for everything else would be great.1.7KViews0likes2CommentsFacing Page View in PDF viewer
I would like to request a 2-page view (open-book-like) (or even 3-page... I use this in Word frequently) in the internal PDF viewer. It would help a lot in reading long scientific articles on large high-res screens. For an idea that is a bit out there, but may be interesting for the upcoming dual-screen devices: being able to show two non-sequential pages of a PDF (or even websites?) next to each other with independent scrolling would be great for browsing long papers when you want to see keep e.g. page 5 visible while you refer to some detail on page 26. This can be achieved by opening two independent windows, but keeping it all in one window would allow me to click internal PDF hyperlinks on the left-side panel and have the right-side panel move without manually changing the view of the document.1.4KViews3likes1CommentRe: NewTab landing page defaults to foreign language
That didn't work unfortunately. In any case, I do not want the NTP language to be the language corresponding to my physical location, given that I frequently do not speak the local language when I travel. I would like to manually set it to e.g. English UK, like the rest of my machine. The behaviour changed a few weeks ago. Before, Edge displayed everything in English, but maybe that was the only supported language, and now I am suffering from a localisation feature?1.3KViews0likes1CommentNewTab landing page defaults to foreign language
Since 2 weeks, my MSN landing NewTab page in Edge Dev is in the Czech language (Czech Bing and Czech news articles). Where is Edge getting its localisation from? I live in the Czech Republic, so I thought it was maybe geographical, but currently I am in France on a trip and it is still in Czech. So it must be reading it from somewhere else. My Windows 10 1909 and Edge Dev (79.0.301.2) is set to English UK, as the display language. I have a few other languages set as preferred languages (including Czech) to view webpages. My Windows country and region settings are set for the UK. My Microsoft Account is set with my UK address as the primary address, my MSN News Windows app is set to English, my old Edge MSN landing page is in UK English, and even the MSN.com profile is set to English with London as a home location. How can I switch the MSN landing page to another language? This should be an easy option for the users, even if the default is read from somewhere else in the system settings.Solved1.4KViews0likes4CommentsRe: Reading list
One of the things I was using the Reading List for was to triage articles on my phone’s Edge browser to be read later on my desktop. Collections are to complicated a feature to be put on the mobile browser probably, but a mobile reading list could appear as a particular collection on the Desktop.3.6KViews0likes27CommentsRe: Dev channel update to 79.0.279.0 is live
josh_bodner v79.0.279 switched my Bing/MSN new tab landing page to the Czech language, which is the locale for my physical location. However, I had it set to UK English and would like to keep it there. The Bing search box is in Czech, but searching defaults to bing.com in English. MSN news are in Czech only and cannot be switched back to English or any other locale. The URL for the new tab landing page appears to still have locale=en-gb in it.14KViews0likes0CommentsRe: Use OS native Language Input Panel to Change Input Language/Spelling on Windows
HotCakeX I agree that's how it works. But I am saying it is a problem if you are writing in one language which has words which are spelled similarly to another one which you also have set up in your preferred list. This means that Edge doesn't tell you that you have spelled the word e.g. in Polish by mistake (because e.g. it's your native language and you naturally spell like that) when you were writing in English.1.2KViews0likes0CommentsRe: Use OS native Language Input Panel to Change Input Language/Spelling on Windows
HotCakeX Thanks. I didn't know about this. That's part of a solution potentially, but it is also not quite so helpful if two languages are reasonably close and you are trying to write in a particular one. Having both of them selected as spell-check languages means that words in either are not flagged. So a sentence containing e.g. a Polish word such as "chrząszcz" is unflagged in a piece of English text such as this one. You can see this would be problematic if the difference between languages in many words boils down to diacritical marks or one letter: e.g. the English "training", Polish "trening" and Czech "trenink" (which are all being allowed right now since I have EN, PL, and CZ spell checking) So then I still need to switch the input language using Win+Space (to change the input keyboard), right click in the text field to pick just one language. Then to actually switch back to the multi-language spell checking, I have to go back to Edge's language settings.1.2KViews0likes2Comments
