Re: Dev channel update to 87.0.664.8 is live
josh_bodner Are you ever going to fix the download UX? The new UX is really bad, hiding the save actions in the bottom left, which is the worse spot on the screen. It's so bad I went back to Chrome. Please add back the option to always have the Save As file dialog just open up for every download3.3KViews1like1CommentRe: Announcing the Open/Save as/Save and Delete prompts for downloads!
HotCakeX First, yes, it is a problem. It's not one extra click a year that's the problem. It's not "oh, I had to do into settings one time and change something". It's every single time I download a file. Second, putting that button on the bottom left is the worst UX decision you can make. The way your eyes scan a screen, that's the place you would hide things you don't want people to see. This is something filmmakers learned decades ago... I guess whoever made the choice a long time ago to have the start menu on the bottom left and the notification area on the bottom right, knew that. The result is, I click on a download link, and nothing happens, because it's in the "hidden" area that eye scan skips. So I have to remember that I'm supposed to look for that button all the way on the bottom left. And if I have a lot of downloads, I have to go back and forth to that area for every single one. And finally. it doesn't help that other browsers have trained us for years on how downloads work. Yes, the old Edge might have done it differently but the old Edge was a failure and most of the potential users for the new Edge never used it or hated it. I'm not saying don't bring over features from that failed product, but let us turn them off. TL;DR; This is really bad UX and users should be able to turn it off and use the previous feature.4.5KViews2likes1CommentRe: Announcing the Open/Save as/Save and Delete prompts for downloads!
There's no need to overcomplicate the solution. It's very simple. All they need to do as add a setting to "ask every time" just like they had before. The code obviously already exists, since that was the behavior until this "feature" was released. That's not in place of this other way of doing it, it's in addition. There's no need to kill the workflow for group A of users to give group B the workflow they prefer. Also, adding the Save and Cancel buttons to the bottom bar doesn't change the fact you'd still have an extra click, hidden at the bottom of the screen (such a terrible UX) on every download.5.4KViews3likes7CommentsRe: Announcing the Open/Save as/Save and Delete prompts for downloads!
GraniteStateColin That's an odd behavior to me but you do you, I guess. For me, it's rare that I download a file for a single use and want it deleted. It's definitely not worth the extra clicks on every download. What would make sense is to make this an option. If you want a new download hidden at the bottom of the screen waiting for you to hit Save As instead of the file dialog just showing up, fine, for those of us who don't want that option, let us turn it off. People who download a lot of files will find this new feature very annoying. I know I do. In fact, now that it's made it's way to the prod version of Edge, I'm switching back to Chrome. I really only checked this page to see if i-am-kent ever responded to the many comments complaining about this feature.8.5KViews0likes24CommentsRe: Announcing the Open/Save as/Save and Delete prompts for downloads!
Based on the other replies to this post, it seems half the people hate this change and half think it's better. That means you need to have both options available. I've pretty much stopped using Edge Dev and switched to the released version for now (since a windows update force installed it anyway) but once this change makes it's way to that version I'll ditch Edge and go back to Chrome. Yes, this change is that annoying.8.9KViews3likes0CommentsRe: Announcing the Open/Save as/Save and Delete prompts for downloads!
i-am-kent With the introduction of this feature, the Save As no longer remembers the last save location. That's probably a bug but it makes this feature very annoying. Even if the last location was still used when I select Save As, you've basically added an extra click to get there and I'm not sure what you've actually enabled here. Before this "feature" I could cancel the download when the save to dialog showed up. I could open the file from the bar below by just clicking on it. Am I missing something here? Please add a way to turn this off and use the current behavior. A much more useful feature would be the option for downloads from different sites to remember their own save locations or make the list of last save locations consistent and correct. Features that might save time for people instead of making basic tasks harder32KViews4likes26CommentsRe: Dev channel update to 78.0.244.0 is live
I keep seeing that request in these release notes and it's been my default browser for a while now. If this is about an OS that isn't Windows 10 maybe you should be more specific in your request. In Windows 10 you can easily do that as DavidGB wrote14KViews0likes0CommentsRe: How soon is Edge expected to switch to Chromium 74?
Yes, this is a bug, still hasn't been fixed. Standard behavior, including keyboard shortcuts, is like other standards. There are a few shortcuts (closing tab/window, navigating between them, etc.) that should be the same and that other browser one might be used to is all other browsers people actually use, the browsers Edge wants to get users away from. It makes sense to have the same behavior there.1.9KViews1like1Comment
