Re: Dev channel update to 79.0.287.2 is live
josh_bodner The updates to the New Tab page are great, but in my personal opinion there is still one area where the New Tab page is sorely lacking - the quick links themselves. There is still no way to rearrange tiles, rename tiles, or have more than 7 tiles active at once. The lack of those 3 core features undermines the usability of quick links quite a lot, as I (and many others) tend to use them for a curated list of very frequently visited sites. This serves a different purpose than the bookmarks bar and menus, but is very difficult to make good use of so far in Edge: Being unable to rearrange tiles makes organization and spatial orientation more difficult, and if you accidentally unpin a tile (happens with some frequency) you can't get it back to the place it was without manually removing all other tiles past it and then re-adding them all, which is very time-consuming and frustrating. Being unable to rename tiles means that more often than not the title is basically just "https://www." and then a couple characters from the site - forcing you to identify sites by their favicon alone. Several tiles from the same site are even more unclear. Limiting the selection to 7 tiles (the "plus"/add tile never goes away) doesn't make a lot of sense when there is already a ton of whitespace present and the ability exists to hide other elements on this page. It would make sense to approach it the way Firefox does, with a default of a single row but a toggleable option to simply show more tiles. I do realize Edge is not pursuing customization at any cost in the sense that say, Vivaldi does - but I don't think there's a need for advanced features here like tile folders, custom icons or anything like that - just a solid, core feature set that makes the New Tab tiles actually usable rather than just keeping them for the sake of feature parity. For what it's worth, Chrome has been terrible at this for a long time as well (recently starting to get a bit better) - whereas Firefox, Vivaldi and Opera have always handled the New Tab tiles in a very useful manner. Thank you for your time!20KViews14likes0CommentsRe: Certain videos are black when streaming from a Steam Link
V-FRROME For reference, none of the suggested flags seem to have made a difference. I did do some more extensive testing however. The following cases work: Firefox displays Netflix and Hulu video without issues. Chrome (somewhat surprisingly) works. Chrome Canary works. Opera works. Vivaldi works. The following cases do not work: The stable, non-Chromium version of Edge does not work (surprisingly). The insider, Chromium version of Edge does not work. The Windows 10 Netflix and Hulu apps do not work. So interestingly it seems like all versions of Edge, including the non-Chromium version, have this issue, alongside the UWP apps.14KViews0likes1CommentCertain videos are black when streaming from a Steam Link
Using a Steam Link device to cast to a second monitor and using certain services such as Netflix or Hulu, videos show as black, empty screen. Sound still plays but no video. Other services such as Youtube show videos just fine. By comparison, using Firefox, both Netflix and Hulu videos show up without any issues. The Windows 10 Netflix/Hulu apps do have the same issue so maybe the issue lies with Chromium rather than Edge? Might be useful if someone owning a similar device such as a Chromecast could try to reproduce this.14KViews1like3CommentsRe: Add a speed dial-like feature more customizable (as Opera/Vivaldi).
v-gapart I second this suggestion, it would be really useful to expand on this feature. I made a detailed post on the advantages and reasons of doing so here: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/Discussions/Improving-most-visited-speed-dial-sites-on-new-tab-page/m-p/7651061.4KViews0likes0CommentsRe: Wordpress new editor not loading in edge dev
I am seeing the same issue on my end. Using Wordpress 5.2.2 with its default WYSIWYG text editor for posts (known as the "block editor", see https://developer.wordpress.org/block-editor/), the editable section is cut off. While it can be interacted with, since it doesn't expand properly to show the content it is essentially unusable. I have discovered one workaround - by closing all of the bottom sections underneath the editor I can scroll down the content, although with some visual glitches. In either case the behavior is definitely different from any other browser - it appears to be Edge-specific. Using Chrome, it works as expected. Using Chrome Canary, it also works as expected.2.1KViews1like0CommentsImproving most visited/speed dial sites on new tab page
Let's look at the concept of the new tab page - specifically, the most visited/"speed dial" grid of icons that lets you access your most used sites without having to go through your bookmarks. Here is how a few other browsers handle this feature: Opera and Vivaldi does this the very best. The icons/tiles vary their size with the amount of sites, giving you a large grid of fewer sites or a small grid of many sites. You can add a ton of sites. And most importantly, you can customize these sites easily by dragging from your bookmarks or manually adding sites tile by tile. It is trivial for a user to assemble a grid of their own personal favorites, and you never feel out of control. Firefox does this reasonably well. It can show 16 sites at the most, and while they are all automatic recommendations they can all be overridden by dragging a bookmark into a tile. It doesn't feel quite as flexible or manageable as Opera or Vivaldi and there's no way to do more than 16 tiles, but overall it works OK. Chrome does this the worst. It used to be really poor but they improved it a little recently. You can add up to 10 custom sites, with no further functionality. You also cannot re-order sites after they are created, and the tiles themselves are very small. Sadly the current Edge build is definitely the most similar to Chrome so far. There is only a single row of 8 sites which is a very low amount, and customizing them is really cumbersome. Replacing a tile is a matter of deleting an existing tile and adding a new one in at the end, and there is no way to reorder the tiles once created. Like Chrome, the tiles are also pretty tiny. Additionally you can't actually name the tiles so they always use the URL as the title, which can be really confusing at times - especially with several sites on the same domain. I would love to see an implementation that is closer to the way Opera of Vivaldi does it - there doesn't have to be a huge deal of in-depth customization, but the ability to add a larger amount of tiles as well as rename and reorder tiles would go a huge way. While the bookmarks bar and menu obviously serve their purpose, the grid on the new tab page is a very useful complement for when you quickly want an overview of your favorite sites. Does anyone have further thoughts or insights here?1.5KViews1like2CommentsRe: Best way to manage multiple sets of credentials/profiles?
Thanks for the response! I missed this feature since I assumed it was just for switching the MS account associated with the browser but it looks like it's closer to what I was looking for than I thought. It doesn't work quite perfectly for my needs - opening two separate windows rather than just switching back and forth in a single window feels a bit clunky, but that's a minor thing. Much more importantly, it's treated as a completely different account in terms of syncing, bookmarks, saved passwords and so on which means I have to copy these things back and forth all the time when I'm just looking to toggle sessions/opened tabs and nothing else. A "light" mode for this feature which only distinguishes between open tabs and cookies would be extremely useful, although it's probably too niche to be all that relevant to most. Nonetheless, even what's currently present is much better than dealing with two separate browsers, so thanks for letting me know!3.9KViews0likes0CommentsBest way to manage multiple sets of credentials/profiles?
Great job on the new Edge, it's gotten to the point where the Canary channel now acts as my primary browser and I rarely have any issues whatsoever. Looking forward to seeing upcoming features! One thing I'm struggling with in most browsers, however, is how to manage multiple 'profiles' each with their own cookies/sessions/sets of tabs. For in stance, I have personal accounts on many websites that I keep open as pinned tabs, but I also have work-related accounts on many of the same sites. Often I would have a "personal session" with a number of tabs open, and a "work session" with a completely different set of tabs open, each for separate purposes. To manage them both efficiently, I have to pretty much have two separate browsers open which is cumbersome since I'd much rather just use Edge for all of it. Using private browsing doesn't work well since I'd have to set up say, a 'work' session all over again each time I start up the browser. Something like Firefox' multi-account containers work OK, but they are on a per-tab basis which is a little bit annoying to manage. What I would really love to see is something like this - by clicking my profile picture, there would be an "Add session" button that lets me open a completely new set of tabs that store its own cookies. Clicking on the profile button would then let me switch back and forth between the two sets of tabs instantly, with no need for two separate windows, or having two separate MS accounts. Bookmarks, saved passwords etc. would be shared and the only thing the sessions are used for are currently open tabs, and cookies. Is this something that might at all be in the works currently, or could be resolved through a browser plugin? Alternatively, does anyone know of a better method altogether to manage this? Would be interested to hear of any thoughts or suggestions!4.2KViews1like4CommentsPinned tabs usability issues
I'm loving the current Edge build a lot! In most regards it works fantastically well and feels really polished compared to its predecessor. That being said, pinned tabs currently have a few usability issues: They are very narrow. While I understand the purpose of pinned tabs is to save space, the idea is also to pin tabs that represent very commonly accessed webpages - so you will be clicking them all the time. With this in mind, making them ~50% wider by adding left and right side padding would go a long way in making them much easier to use. The leftmost pinned tab has a space on the left of it which cannot be clicked - this makes it harder to use by requiring much greater mouse precision rather than just swiping the cursor into the top-left corner. I am assuming this might be intentional as a way to drag the window, but most browsers have a toggleable setting for this since a large majority of users run their main browser window maximized at all times anyway. As someone who makes very extensive use of pinned tabs, resolving these issues would go a huge way in making Edge more usable at the moment.Solved1.8KViews6likes6Comments
