Outlook logic for email headers?
Does anyone have a design reference about how Outlook displays certain headers in the client; e.g. from, reply-to, sender? I've found Outlook 2019 and the 365 web client ignore the 'from' field and changes what the end user sees in the 'from' field. Is there a design doc that defines how the 'from' field is derived? It appears outlook ignores the 'from' header and displays data it derives from other email headers, e.g. sender. Is there a document describing this design decision? This behavior is very apparent with email received from mail lists. Specifically, the Open Source mail list software, Sympa; this software stack allows a list owner to change the 'from' email address to reflect a number of user friendly options and Outlook simply ignores the 'from' field. The available options include: “Name” (display_name) “Name” (e-mail) (name_and_email) “Name” (via List) (name_via_list) “Name” (e-mail via List) (name_email_via_list) “List” (on behalf of e-mail) (list_for_email) “List” (on behalf of Name) (list_for_name) I've been testing the 'from' behaviors on Office 2019, O365, Gmail and Yahoo mail. The Microsoft email clients also behave differently while the Gmail/Yahoo clients conform and display to the appropriate 'from' header. I've created a spreadsheet showing what the various email clients display in the 'from' field based on the above rewrite options. So - two questions/issues 1) A description on how Outlook derives the 'from' field. 2) Is there a way to over-ride this behavior and just display the 'from' field as other email clients do?
