HiddenGroupMembershipEnabled - SDS setting?

Copper Contributor

I have a customer who syncs groups to 365 via a CSV import to SDS. Student groups have the HiddenGroupMembershipEnabled attribute set as true. I'm aware that this attribute cannot be edited and to disable this feature, the group would need to be re-created. Is anyone aware of any setting or configuration in SDS that is automatically setting this attribute on student groups? If there is such a setting, can this be changed?

Many thanks for your help.

Hi Anthony-

I did some digging to find out if the setting could be changed.  HIddenGroupMembershipEnabled is part of the group creation option, and the default behavior for SDS.  This was requested early on by the majority of the SDS customers for privacy reasons. There are no plans to make this setting optional in SDS.

I did find this TechNet article (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/mt238274(v=exchg.160).aspx) that gives a bit more detail, but also specifically states that the attribute cannot be changed after a group is created.

If there is a strong need for this with your customer, please give us your specific feedback here (https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/feedback/issues ).

Thanks!

This is interesting as I think it has to do with my problems ( https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/School-Data-Sync/Many-problems-with-groups-created-by-SDS-imp... )

Is there really no way to make SDS set up groups just the same way they are being built when I add a group manually ?

Any Solution yet?

At the start of the school this year we sorted the students with SDS into the new classes. For this purpose new groups were created with SDS. Since not every teacher uses teams, we want to have the teams created by the teachers themselves. But unfortunately the teachers do not see the members of the groups when they create a team. Is there a way to disable the option HiddenGroupMembershipEnabled?

We had the same. The teachers created Teams and used SDS groups to add students. But there were 0 members each time.

But I discovered that the teacher who tried to add the students was not the owner of the group. When I gave the teacher owner rights, everything worked.
