We’re excited to share that as of today, you can edit shared projects in Project for the Web. This frequently requested feature enables you to collaborate more seamlessly with your colleagues on projects.

With this feature update, you can now access and edit the same set of capabilities in Project that you have in Planner. This means you can make updates to fields such as task name, start and due date, priority, labels, checklists, notes, and attachments. For the full list of what can and can’t be accessed, check out our service description: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/office365/servicedescriptions/project-online-service-description/project-web-service-description.

To try this out, go to any project shared with you on project.microsoft.com and make changes to any task.

This change applies to the following families of Office 365 suites and their education and GCC counterparts:

  • Microsoft 365 F3 and Office 365 F3
  • Office 365 E1
  • Microsoft 365 for Business Standard
  • Microsoft 365 for Business Premium
  • Microsoft E3 and Office 365 E3
  • Microsoft E5 and Office 365 E5

To create a project or use more advanced capabilities such as dependencies or custom fields, you should procure a Project license. If you don't have a Project license and are interested in trying one out, you can start a free 30 day trial of Project for the web at aka.ms/tryprojectnow.

For more information on this feature check out our documentation.  We’re looking forward to hearing your feedback as you and your team members use these capabilities in your workflow. Please feel free to submit any feedback directly through our feedback portal.

Thank you!

Version 4.0
  • Due to non-consolidated and messy project / task management in terms of the O365 tools, we have moved ayway to Monday. Myself being fan of O365, I am further watching MS attempts to improve the situation, hence I am eagerly awaiting the merge of Planner and Project for the web. However, there are some "but"s:

    • When looking into the Project task card, it is a pure minimum. We want to have Planner like card, with displayed note or checklist or image etc.
    • Grid View - the tree you can make, does not necessarily reflex your bucket / sprint structure, can be confusing.
    • Grid View - I wish there was a separation possible between the root elements - see how pleasant Monday is - you can make screenshot right away for your presentation, whereas Project looks like a little bit more enhanced Excel 😞
    • Project portfolio - we were thining of using one Project file for the multiple of projects. But then Goals can't be set to particular project. There is no means of project in terms of one Project file. Maybe a custom field.
      • So - having projects separated each to its own file - how should we show / display a consolidated state? Monday allows you to consolidate project boards to one central board. Maybe Roadmap could be used, but it lack some features and is lotss of manual work.
      • MS Project simply does not allow to display department / company wide consolidated view of multiple projects, or does it? And no - exporting to PBI is not the way, sorry.

  • Hi PetrKrenzelok: I'll make sure to pass this onto our team - while we may not be able to guarantee changes to all the "but"s you've mentioned, we certainly will take your input into consideration when figuring out how we can continue to improve on our product. Appreciate the time you're taking to leave us your feedback, thank you!

I will add my wishes here as well:

    1. Import a specific template that each project manager can use

    2. Enable a "delete task" policy only for a certain group (Project managers), so that project members can update a task, but not delete it.

    3. Ability to publish a plan to PDF to fit a page.  Currently, if you have a project that runs over a long time period the PDF becomes a mess

    • I am also waiting to see how you deploy a portfolio view with general status of the different projects that are running at the same time . This is a huge pain point in connected and global organizations.
    • Connecting the tasks from different projects to another board is also needed... At this allows teams to consolidate all the tasks from the different projects into their own management board to look at them together for planning and team alignment . Switching from one project to the other to align on the different running projects does not support efficient project manager. Currently, we are aiming at Asana that has some of these functionalities.
    • I am eager to have this in O365 as we already have several O365 tools.

Yes, 100% - the ability to see a dashboard of tasks and filter by date or assignee across multiple projects is a must have. Please add this feature Microsoft, I believe I've already upvoted as much as I could in the feedback portal.

Task Conversation is absolutely terrible as compared to Planner Comments.  +1000 for the ability to 'show on card'.  We use Planner Notes show on card to quickly identify task status updates from board view.  Lets go M$FT, we can do better here.
