Mail & Calendar Apps Will Be Replaced with New Outlook for Windows December 2024
Original Publish Date: June 2023 | MC650424 Revised Date: August 30, 2023, based on Microsoft's Updated Message See text in red font.
Microsoft's revised announcement states that the Mail and Calendar Apps will no longer be supported at the end of 2024 and will become the New Outlook for Windows. In the meantime, users are encouraged to try the New Outlook for Windows while they can switch back and forth between the Mail App and New Outlook versions.
At the beginning of 2024, all Windows 11 devices will include the Free version of New Outlook for Windows as the default mailbox application.
Supported Accounts: The new Outlook for Windows can currently support Microsoft 365 consumer accounts such as Outlook.com, Hotmail.com, and Live.com, as well as Microsoft 365 work or school accounts and Gmail. In the near future, we plan to add support for Yahoo!, iCloud, and other email providers through IMAP and POP. Stay tuned.

We will replace the Mail and Calendar apps in Windows with the new Outlook for Windows by the end of 2024.
After this change is implemented:
- Users can no longer use or download the Mail and Calendar apps.
- Users with a Microsoft 365 or Office 365 subscription with access to the Microsoft 365 desktop apps can use the new Outlook for Windows.
- Users can use the new Outlook for Windows with any personal email account (Outlook.com, Gmail, etc.), even without a subscription.
- If you would like to prevent users from adding their corporate email accounts to the new Outlook, you can follow the instructions in this document to disable the application for a single user, group of users, or the whole tenant:
- In mid-September 2023, we will begin auto-migrating Mail & Calendar app users to the new Outlook for Windows with an option to go back if they choose. Users can return to the current Mail & Calendar apps by clicking the toggle in the new Outlook for Windows. We also want to reiterate that these changes will not affect your organization’s use of classic Outlook for Windows.
What you need to do to prepare:
There is nothing you do to prepare now, but we recommend you:

I just can't believe you're getting rid of automation completely, there's no way to automate outlook anymore and deprecating this makes me restate my vision about VBA in Excel.

I suspect that some of what I am about to say has been said before.
I have to run two email apps, one the Office 2013 Outlook desktop app and the other the New Outlook version 1.2024.1216.300. The need to run both was due to the loss of access to my Outlook.com email account through the Outlook 2013 - it ceased to log in and I could not find any way to get an App Password or other credentials to allow me access, hence the need to use the New Outlook. If there is a way to regain this access I would be very appreciative.
I had a C# console application I wrote that looked into a specific folder in the Outlook account, read the emails and generated reports based on the content of the emails. This was periodically critical to our Township's functioning and worked for years with Outlook 2013 Desktop. I have been trying, without success, to rewrite application to see the New Outlook but that application does not appear in the Registry nor in the Programs and Features list though it does appear in the Task Manager Task list. Some forum posts say that the New Outlook is not discoverable and does not have an API - is that true? If not, what entries should I be looking for in the Registry or Programs and Features tab and/or what parameters should I be passing to MAPI in C-Sharp? I have about 60 days to solve this.
The New Outlook places an advertisement in the Outlook inbox so that even if there is no real email in there it shows that there is an unread email, which is not fair and is a waste of time on a massive scale over the user base. Apparently, none of the other non-Microsoft accounts do this, for which I am grateful.
Outlook 2013 can open multiple .PST files. I have archival .PST files and one that is used as a filing cabinet for the various entities that I handle. If I cease using Outlook 2013 I will, according to the MS literature, have limited folders. The ability to open .PST files does not appear to be a functionality of the New Outlook. If I am wrong, please point me to that functionality.

Correct. Outlook 2013 does not support oAuth2 and Microsoft now requires it to connect. Email does not support app passwords but they are available for other apps, like xbox that does not support oauth. (Need to enable 2FA to create them).

True - new Outlook can't be automated.

If you have a subscription and the Microsoft account is set as the primary account, there are no ads. From what I understand, if no subscription, all accounts should have ads at the top of the inbox.
Tip: if you use Focused inbox, the ads are only shown on the Other tab.

It's in new Outlook now but the PST files ae read-only at this time. Look in Settings > General > Outlook Data Files - but it appears to only be listed in my Outlook when a Microsoft mailbox is set as default.

Diane,
Are telling me that there is no solution to the need of the Microsoft development community to be able to access a Microsoft mail application (Outlook 2024) using Microsoft tools (Visual Studio C-Sharp)? That Microsoft has disinherited all user developed applications that accessed Microsoft's mail applications? If that is not the case, can you point me to the solution? I now have about 50 days to come up with one.
Regards,
Wart

I've resigned myself to the fact that I'm stuck using Outlook. At least the touchscreen functionality has improved. I have 2 persistent complaints:
- It's a processor hog!! It is now impossible use multiple programs on my Surface 7 with Outlook open. Every time I have a Zoom call, I have to open my calendar, click the link, and then CLOSE Outlook for Zoom to function. Essentially making a Surface no longer useable.
- What's the deal with hijacking all links to open in Edge? That is NOT my default Browser, yet if I click anything on an email, that's what opens. Instead I have to right-click, and then click "open link" to get it to open in my chosen Brower. NOT a good thing.
I still object to this forced change, and would use something else if my institutions would allow it.
New Outlook is a resource hog? Do you have an ARM processor?
If you have an office license, you can use classic Outlook. You can turn off browser hijacking if you are using classic Outlook - it's an option in file > Options > Advanced. Links in Outlook open in a sidebar in Edge
If classic Outlook is missing: You can't open classic Outlook on a new Windows PC

hello, what I wanna know is Exchange server with Active sync(on-prem and on-prem ADFS) mail ever gonna be implemented or not, cause that's a BIG thing for me to move to new outlook and also will u be adding shell extension for sending files via right click+share with new outlook
Hi tvargek
In case others are reading this thread, there are several reasons why some Outlook classic or exchange features are unsupported in New Outlook.
1. Legacy technology
2. Unused Features by the mass majority
3. Better enhancements aligned with how we work today and beyond
4. Features are on the backlog
/Teresa 12/12/2024No, Active Sync will not be added to new Outlook. It's an old technology and is not secure.

I have been banging against the wall for 3 months to make the New Outlook work with IMAP account. For some reason it synchronises e-mails only until Aug 2024. With Mail And Calendar all gets synchronised properly, but due to enforced policy next time you run it it will switch to New Outlook and ... I am back in the square one. Anybody at MS to look into this, please?
While I recommend trying other email apps - Thunderbird or eM client are my recommendations but there are others - you could try the steps here: How do you permanently turn off new outlook? - Microsoft Community to go back to windows mail.
But note: Mail will be removed from the Microsoft store and once it is gone, you won't be able to repair or reinstall it.

If anyone is looking for a decent replacement for Windows Mail on Windows 11, give Wino Mail a try, it's a good alternative and I like it better than MS forced Outlook.

I finally have my email accounts and calendar working seamlessly on all my Windows and Apple devices. Now I'm being told that I must switch to the new Outlook which does not migrate calendar and does not give me the ability to see all my email inboxes on the same list. I don't even like the look and feel of the new Outlook. I hope Microsoft stops this nonsense. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
- KitblueCopper ContributorI agree if it ain't broke don't fix it. I was faced with switching a month ago. I didn't want to do it, but I finally did, and it is working out. There are some functions not there, but I've managed to do without them. All my emails were there after I migrated. I did not like the look or feel of it, but it got better after I got used to it. I hope you're not too stressed. I think it will work out.
- bob1580Copper ContributorWere you able to migrate your calendar events? I have thousands of events over a long-time span, including past events that I want to save a record of. It would be impossible to re-enter them all manually.

Teresa_Cyrus Hello, while using the new Outlook and comparing functionality I miss one I regularly use fom the locally intallad version.
In the native Outlook client one can send a mailmesage with the option to add it you the recipients task/calendar in the past so when it arrives in their mailbox it will show in thick red tekst and also provide a pop up to the user like you have the annouchement of an appointment.
This is regularly used by our users to give extra attention to a message other than the functio we also have of high priority. This functionality is now managed via the To-Do Application.
You can drag an email to the Task list, open the To Do, and share the task with a person.
You can create task list groups for better organization.I will create a video on this. Check back next week.

Teresa_Cyrus I can't open live mail so this is mute. I've sent in my concerns over and over and have heard nothing so what good is this without mail. My calendar doesn't work well either.

Teresa_Cyrus I'm uninstalling both

Is there any word on API? I could adapt to a new language but I need an API to do automations like we could in VBA

I don't know why anything is put in this Microsoft forum because nothing ever changes. I put things here and have never ever had Microsoft fix anything.
- tomearlyverizonnetCopper ContributorIt's just venting. We all know that Microsoft thinks of us as peons and couldn't care less about what insignificant beings think. Some of them might read this as amusement but that's about it.
