Want to quickly notify your meeting participants that you are running late?

A new feature that strengthens the integration across Outlook and Microsoft Teams is coming to the new Outlook for Windows: the capability to chat in a Teams meeting from Outlook. Rollout is expected to be complete by February 2024.

How it works

When a meeting is created, either from Outlook or Teams, with Teams as the online meeting option, then meeting participants can chat in the meeting right from Outlook.

Users can initiate meeting chat from various entry points such as calendar peek, meeting details, context menu, My Day, and reminder.

Teams Policies

Teams meeting chat policy set by the organization applies for Teams meeting chat from Outlook as well.

For example, if chat has been turned off for a meeting until the meeting starts, then the same policy applies for the Teams meeting chat from Outlook.

Similarly, the user’s Teams settings control if the meeting chat from Outlook should open in a new window or the main window in Teams.

If the user does not have Teams installed, then meeting chat will open in the web version of Teams.

We hope this feature will improve your meeting experience from Outlook, making your collaboration easier.

Cheers!

Harini1075  Yes, using New Outlook, the "chat" option is not available.  Going to check the Teams policy about chat before the meeting.

Is this GA? We're not seeing it yet in our tenant.

  • Hi m36five,
Yes it is available world-wide from 25-Feb-24 in New Outlook for Windows.

Hope chat is enabled in Teams meetings in you organization.

If issue persists, please raise a support ticket with tenant details for us to investigate.

I can't find this feature.  Can someone please provide steps, thanks.

  • JMerck
Sorry to know that. Hope you are using 'New Outlook for Windows'.
Can you please create a meeting with 'Teams meeting' toggle ON? After the meeting is created, both 'Join' and 'Chat' buttons should be visible in calendar peek or in meeting detail view.

If problem persists, please log a ticket in Microsoft support for product group to investigate.

    Thanks for your time.

Harini1075  I can confirm this, it's also not available in three of my tenants. Don't think that this feature has been rolled out globally.
    Meeting chat is on.

No chat option in Outlook appointment (Outlook 1.2024.911.200 (Production)).

The chat option is available on Outlook Mobile, based on roadmap ID 387501, but not in the new Outlook for Windows.
