It’s been a busy month here! Earlier in January , we let you know about updates to file management in SharePoint modern document libraries (copying SharePoint to SharePoint; SharePoint to OneDrive for business; and OneDrive to OneDrive). We’re pleased to announce our latest three enhancements:
Removing the 50MB limit for file copies
We’ve started rolling out support for larger file sizes, all the way up to 500MB.
Copying in place
We also allow for copying in place. If you copy a file to the same destination, you’ll create a new copy, automatically appended with a number on the end. This is fantastic if you want to build a new document using the original as a starting point (it’s how we wrote this blog post itself)!
Selecting and downloading multiple files to a single ZIP file
Finally, we’ve added support for downloading multiple files at once. Just select multiple files from the library view and you’ll be prompted to save a single compressed Zip file containing just your selections.
As before, most of these functions are reached from the command bar in modern document libraries. These enhancements are coming to SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business.
Modern Document Library Command Bar We also just rolled out a slew of new capabilities for OneDrive sync, activity and administration, as we announced on the OneDrive blog.
These enhancements will be rolled out immediately for First Release, followed as soon as possible by general availability to all tenants.
Moving files
At present, Move is limited to file movement within a given document library – you can’t move files from OneDrive to SharePoint, SharePoint to SharePoint, etc. We recognize that the delay in supporting Move To for files may be disappointing. We promise that the wait will be worth it.
However, if you need to get started sooner there are several file management utilities available in the Office Store that can augment our intrinsic Copy and Move commands. For example, Tru Copy from TekReach allows you to copy and move files or convert them to PDF in bulk. As always, we encourage you to review the specifics of any software solutions on the Store before deciding to add them to your environment.
