Enhancing File Management for OneDrive and SharePoint Modern Document Libraries

It’s been a busy month here!  Earlier in January , we let you know about updates to file management in SharePoint modern document libraries (copying SharePoint to SharePoint; SharePoint to OneDrive for business; and OneDrive to OneDrive).  We’re pleased to announce our latest three enhancements:

Removing the 50MB limit for file copies

We’ve started rolling out support for larger file sizes, all the way up to 500MB.

Copying in place

We also allow for copying in place.  If you copy a file to the same destination, you’ll create a new copy, automatically appended with a number on the end.  This is fantastic if you want to build a new document using the original as a starting point (it’s how we wrote this blog post itself)!

Selecting and downloading multiple files to a single ZIP file

Finally, we’ve added support for downloading multiple files at once. Just select multiple files from the library view and you’ll be prompted to save a single compressed Zip file containing just your selections.

As before, most of these functions are reached from the command bar in modern document libraries.  These enhancements are coming to SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business.

Modern Document Library Command Bar We also just rolled out a slew of new capabilities for OneDrive sync, activity and administration, as we announced on the OneDrive blog.

These enhancements will be rolled out immediately for First Release, followed as soon as possible by general availability to all tenants.

Moving files

At present, Move is limited to file movement within a given document library – you can’t move files from OneDrive to SharePoint, SharePoint to SharePoint, etc.  We recognize that the delay in supporting Move To for files  may be disappointing.  We promise that the wait will be worth it.

However, if you need to get started sooner there are several file management utilities available in the Office Store that can augment our intrinsic Copy and Move commands.  For example, Tru Copy from TekReach allows you to copy and move files or convert them to PDF in bulk.    As always, we encourage you to review the specifics of any software solutions on the Store before deciding to add them to your environment.

    Hi Chris McNulty ,

the 500MB limit to copy folder with CreateCopyJob csom-api / "copy to" in document library is a temporary limit ?

Can be some options (maybe with global administration rights?) to bypass this limit?

I try to copy 10GB (one-time operation) from a document library to other site document library with 10 folders, and one folder have more than 500MB and so failed.

I have more overhead to split 500MB at time and copy it...

Other questions: if I want backup a site collections (and then restore as other site..) exists a equivalent command to "backup-spsite" for SharePoint Online? At the time I have more customers that remain On Premise because there is no options to "clone" site and mostly no backup options on online! (14 days of MS default isn't accettable, my customers want to be sure they can find a document lost of 6 months ago and there is no lost our data!)

Great update, thank you, and looking forward to more.  Ran into an issue copying folders from a newly provisioined site collection back to the original site collection or to OneDrive - an "Unknown Error" appears and only the first file in the folder is copied.  Submitted this to our partner AppRiver a few weeks ago, who engaged Microsoft, who pulled a log capture, but we haven't heard back.

  • Its in First Release now, rolling out in phases.  When that completes we move to general release.  Its hard to predict becuase we adjust the rollout speed based on errors and performance - if we see no issues, we go faster, and if we see more we slow down.

  • It's a good idea. I would add it to uservoice.onedrive.com. It's where our engineering team looks and comments on issues just like this.

  • Thanks.  Jeroen Ritmeijer I'd be happy to mention your add in - do you add an action to the modern command bar for moving files?  PDF conversion is also great, but not directly what we're discussing.

Craig Debbo, notig to share yet on adding this to the mobile OneDrive apps - ading Stephen Rose to the dialog.

Any update on the iOS/Android OneDrive app. Specifically when will the copy OneDrive to Sharepoint feature be supported on iOS? Same question for 'move' but I guess that will have to wait until it's available on the web too.

    Thanks

  • That is a brilliant and long overdue improvement.

And, as Microsoft doesn't appear to mind plugging 3rd party App store entries in posts like this, make sure to check out the Muhimbi PDF Converter for SharePoint Online if you need to convert or merge multiple files to different document libraries.

Yeah a shameless plug, but if you mention PDF Conversion in SharePoint Online, don't leave the best one out.

  • For every copy operation, does the new 500MB limit apply to the size of every single file or to to the sum of the sizes of all the files?

    TIA
