Access to "Copilot in Window (Preview)" via the taskbar
Like many others, I had difficulties accessing it right from the start. Once it worked with workarounds, then "Copilot in Window (Preview)" did not start docked in the sidebar but in its own Edge window. At the moment it works again with the workaround in which I end the "Microsoft Edge" task via the task manager after starting Windows. Then "Copilot in Window (Preview)" starts correctly docked in the sidebar.
I have set and checked all possible tips (registry) accordingly.
I live in Switzerland and general access to Copilot should actually be guaranteed. Access in Edge and in the Office apps works.
After an intensive search and with the help of Copilot , I came across the following registry entries:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Copilot
CopilotDisabledReason=IsEnabledForGeographicRegionFailed
IsCopilotAvailable=0
Copilot says :
The entry CopilotDisabledReason=IsEnabledForGeographicRegionFailed in the Windows registry means that the Copilot function or application cannot be activated on your device due to geographical restrictions. This can happen if the software or service is not available in your current region.
.....
The registry entry you mention could have been set for various reasons, possibly due to a temporary problem with location detection or misconfiguration.
I have now deleted the location history, unfortunately with no positive results.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to proceed? For example, can the entries be deleted?
Thank you very much for your further assistance.
Best regards
Andreas

Based on the cautious responses, I assumed that it was a little more complicated than I expected.
Again, after a lot of research, I found a Chinese website. The translation service did not work perfectly. However, I came across the file «IntegratedServicesRegionPolicySet.json»".
With additional research, I assumed that the Digital Markets Act (DMA) also applies to Switzerland and has not yet been implemented.
In «IntegratedServicesRegionPolicySet.json» included Switzerland (CH) as well as the entire EU.
The modification of the file with the corresponding authorization adjustment, with backup copies and with a restore point showed up on the subsequent restart. Copilot in Windows (preview) showed up in the taskbar from the beginning and could be started normally by clicking on the icon in the taskbar. The corresponding entries in the registry now look like this:
I hope this works for a while now.
I do not recommend anyone to make these adjustments. If you do, it is your own responsibility.
Best regards
Andreas

- mande1191Steel Contributor....and another great thing that now works.
The key combination Windows+C now opens and closes Copilot in Windows (Preview). 😉- mande1191Steel ContributorToday, after the update “2024-05 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 version 23H2 for x64-based systems (KB5037853)” I had to repeat the “magic”. With respect and the appropriate backups (registry, restore point) I performed the tasks. Yes, it works perfectly again.
Any users among you from Europe struggling with the same problem?
Answers would be much appreciated.
