Hyperlinks not working - address and text to display are no longer the same

Copper Contributor

Hi - I am working with excel to post documents to a website. in the past the hyperlink text to display automatically repeated to the address line. Now the address line is only showing the path to the first folder, not the final folder or document.   Not sure when it started, but has been at least two weeks.

It seems like there might be a formatting issue with your hyperlinks in Excel. Here's how you can troubleshoot and fix the problem:

  1. Check the Hyperlink Formula:
    • Select the cell containing the hyperlink.
    • Look at the formula bar to see the hyperlink formula.
    • Ensure that both the address and the text to display are correctly specified in the formula.
  2. Correct the Hyperlink Formula:
    • If the address and text to display are not the same in the formula, you can edit the formula to make them match.
    • The syntax for a hyperlink formula in Excel is: =HYPERLINK("address", "text_to_display").
    • Make sure that the "address" part of the formula points to the correct destination, including the full path to the final folder or document.
    • Also, ensure that the "text_to_display" part of the formula accurately reflects the text you want to appear as the hyperlink.
  3. Update the Hyperlink Formatting:
    • After correcting the hyperlink formula, you can update the formatting to ensure that the hyperlink text matches the address.
    • Select the cell containing the corrected hyperlink.
    • Right-click on the cell and choose "Hyperlink" from the context menu.
    • In the "Edit Hyperlink" dialog box, confirm that the "Text to display" field matches the address in the "Address" field.
    • If necessary, adjust the text to display to match the address.
  4. Test the Hyperlinks:
    • After making the corrections, test the hyperlinks to verify that they now point to the correct destinations.
    • Click on each hyperlink to open the corresponding document or folder and ensure that it works as expected.

By following these steps, you should be able to troubleshoot and fix the issue with hyperlinks not displaying the correct address in Excel. If the problem persists…
