Companies performing workloads that utilize high-performance computing (HPC) are full of some of the brightest minds out there and are tackling the world’s most challenging problems. We see the results every day, though we may not realize what’s being used on the backend to achieve those results. That incredible movie you saw probably used HPC to render the videos or support artists remotely around the world, like Jellyfish Pictures. Looking at a map, it’s hard to imagine the amount of work that went into analyzing those images and rendering the final image.  Impact Observatory used HPC to do this, processing 450,000 Sentinel-2 scenes and 500 terabytes of satellite data and compressing those into the final map of the entire world.  Looking at wind turbines, you may not expect them to be intelligent, but Vestas is using reinforcement learning to mitigate wake effect, generate more wind energy, and build a sustainable future.  Combine HPC with Microsoft Azure, a cloud built for HPC, and you have groundbreaking technologies completing workloads in a fraction of the time thanks to the combination of the best hardware and all the benefits of the cloud.

International Supercomputing (ISC) ’22 is one of the biggest events of the year for people using HPC, machine learning, and data analytics.  The event is taking place in person in Hamburg, Germany this year for the first time since the pandemic, with a full hybrid experience. It’s a time for HPC practitioners around the world to network and talk about the incredible technologies. And it’s time for you to come meet us in person and talk about anything under the sun in HPC.  From manufacturing to life sciences, to the public sector, people from all industries will get a chance to learn from each other and talk about the incredible advancements and investments being made.

This year Microsoft is a silver sponsor, and we’re looking forward to getting a chance to see you.  Make sure to stop by our exhibition booth, attend one of our sessions, meet us for an after-hour event, or sign up for 1:1 meetings with our experts.

Maturing Public Cloud HPC with Microsoft Azure

Karl Podesta, Senior Specialist, Azure High Performance Computing

You've probably heard that public cloud can enable large scale simulation, processing, or machine learning at supercomputer scales, for anyone.  You may have even experienced this yourself!  A pilot or proof-of-concept (POC) might get you started.  But what about the longer term - how do you operate this?  What are the differences in operating a HPC cluster on-premises, or a HPC cluster in the public cloud?  AND, how is this further complicated when the architecture is hybrid (between on-premise and cloud), and even includes non-traditional HPC workloads like Machine Learning or AI?  Inspired by real customer stories and experiences from running HPC & ML/AI projects and operations at scale, in production, over multiple years - we share some ideas, strategies, tips, and follow-on content for operating HPC in the public cloud (and in particular, with Azure HPC).

Understanding AI + AI infrastructure

Sherry Wang, Sr. Program Manager, Azure HPC and AI

AI has reached a critical juncture and is experiencing quantum leaps in model complexity.  This complexity has resulted in a corresponding requirement for IT infrastructure. The need for an AI-first infrastructure has been established - one that can not only scale up to take advantage of accelerators within a server, but also scale out to embrace many servers distributed across a network. Listen to learn about how Microsoft Azure continues to be the only cloud that offers purpose-built AI supercomputers, facilitating your machine learning workloads - from the earliest stages of development through to enterprise-grade production deployments that require full-blown MLOps.

HBv3 virtual machines: Now upgraded with AMD 3D V-cache

Recently we announced general availability of AMD’s new 3rd Gen EPYCTM processors with 3D V-cache, codenamed “Milan-X”, on HBv3 virtual machines. These processors significantly improve the performance, scaling efficiency, and cost-effectiveness of a variety of memory performance-bound workloads such as CFD, explicit finite element analysis, computational geoscience, weather simulation, and silicon design RTL workflows. In addition, all HBv3-series VMs globally will soon be upgraded with Milan-X processors. This upgrade will be provided at no additional cost beyond existing pricing for HBv3-series VMs, and with no changes required of customer workloads. Read more in the preview announcement.
