In November 2023, Microsoft announced our strategy to unify security operations by bringing the best of XDR and SIEM together. Our first step was bringing Microsoft Sentinel into the Microsoft Defender portal, giving teams a single, comprehensive view of incidents, reducing queue management, enriching threat intel, streamlining response and enabling SOC teams to take advantage of Gen AI in their day-to-day workflow. Since then, considerable progress has been made with thousands of customers using this new unified experience; to enhance the value customers gain when using Sentinel in the Defender portal, multi-tenancy and multi-workspace support was added to help customers with more sophisticated deployments. Our mission is to unify security operations by bringing all your data, workflows, and people together to unlock new capabilities and drive better security outcomes. As a strong example of this, last year we added extended posture management, delivering powerful posture insights to the SOC team. This integration helps build a closed-loop feedback system between your pre- and post-breach efforts. Exposure Management is just one example. By bringing everything together, we can take full advantage of AI and automation to shift from a reactive to predictive SOC that anticipates threats and proactively takes action to defend against them. Beyond Exposure Management, Microsoft has been constantly innovating in the Defender experience, adding not just SIEM but also Security Copilot. The Sentinel experience within the Defender portal is the focus of our innovation energy and where we will continue to add advanced Sentinel capabilities going forward. Onboarding to the new unified experience is easy and doesn’t require a typical migration. Just a few clicks and permissions. Customers can continue to use Sentinel in the Azure portal while it is available even after choosing to transition. Today, we’re announcing that we are moving to the next phase of the transition with a target to retire the Azure portal for Microsoft Sentinel by July 1, 2026. What’s next: Preparing for the retirement of the Sentinel Experience in the Azure Portal Microsoft is committed to supporting every single customer in making that transition over the next 12 months. Beginning July 1, 2026, Sentinel users will be automatically redirected to the Defender portal. After helping thousands of customers smoothly make the transition, we recommend that security teams begin planning their migration and change management now to ensure continuity and avoid disruption. While the technical process is very straightforward, we have found that early preparation allows time for workflow validation, training, and process alignment to take full advantage of the new capabilities and experience. Tips for a Successful Migration to Microsoft Defender 1. Leverage Microsoft’s help: Leverage Microsoft documentation, instructional videos, guidance, and in-product support to help you be successful. A good starting point is the documentation on Microsoft Learn. 2. Plan early: Engage stakeholders early including SOC and IT Security leads, MSSPs, and compliance teams to align on timing, training and organizational needs. Make sure you have an actionable timeline and agreement in the organization around when you can prioritize this transition to ensure access to the full potential of the new experience. 3. Prepare your environment: Plan and design your environment thoroughly. This includes understanding the prerequisites for onboarding Microsoft Sentinel workspaces, reviewing and deciding on access controls, and planning the architecture of your tenant and workspace. Proper planning will ensure a smooth transition and help avoid any disruptions to your security operations. 4. Leverage Advanced Threat Detection: The Defender portal offers enhanced threat detection capabilities with advanced AI and machine learning for Microsoft Sentinel. Make sure to leverage these features for faster and more accurate threat detection and response. This will help you identify and address critical threats promptly, improving your overall security posture. 5. Utilize Unified Hunting and Incident Management: Take advantage of the enhanced hunting, incident, and investigation capabilities in Microsoft Defender. This provides a comprehensive view for more efficient threat detection and response. Today, we announced a significant expansion of Microsoft Sentinel’s capabilities through the introduction of Sentinel data lake, now rolling out in public preview. Security teams cannot defend what they cannot see and analyze. With exploding volumes of security data, organizations are struggling to manage costs while maintaining effective threat coverage. Do-it-yourself security data architectures have perpetuated data silos, which in turn have reduced the effectiveness of AI solutions in security operations. With Sentinel data lake, we are taking a major step to address these challenges. Microsoft Sentinel data lake enables a fully managed, cloud-native, data lake that is purposefully designed for security, right inside Sentinel. Built on a modern lake architecture and powered by Azure, Sentinel data lake simplifies security data management, eliminates security data silos, and enables cost-effective long-term security data retention with the ability to run multiple forms of analytics on a single copy of that data. Security teams can now store and manage all security data. This takes the market-leading capabilities of Sentinel SIEM and supercharges it even further. Customers can leverage the data lake for retroactive TI matching and hunting over a longer time horizon, track low and slow attacks, conduct forensics analysis, build anomaly insights, and meet reporting & compliance needs. By unifying security data, Sentinel data lake provides the AI ready data foundation for AI solutions. Let’s look at some of Sentinel data lake’s core features. Simplified onboarding and enablement inside Defender Portal: Customers can easily discover and enable the new data lake from within the Defender portal, either from the banner on the home page or from settings. Setting up a modern data lake now is just a click away, empowering security teams to get started quickly without a complex setup. Simplified security data management: Sentinel data lake works seamlessly with existing Sentinel connectors. It brings together security logs from Microsoft services across M365, Defender, Azure, Entra, Purview, Intune plus third-party sources like AWS, GCP, network and firewall data from 350+ connectors and solutions. The data lake supports Sentinel’s existing table schemas while customers can also create custom connectors to bring raw data into the data lake or transform it during ingestion. In the future, we will enable additional industry-standard schemas. The data lake expands beyond just activity logs by including a native asset store. Critical asset information is added to the data lake using new Sentinel data connectors for Microsoft 365, Entra, and Azure, enabling a single place to analyze activity and asset data enriched with Threat intelligence. A new table management experience makes it easy for customers to choose where to send and store data, as well as set related retention policies to optimize their security data estate. Customers can easily send critical, high-fidelity security data to the analytics tier or choose to send high-volume, low fidelity logs to the new data lake tier. Any data brought into the analytics tier is automatically mirrored into the data lake at no additional charge, making data lake the central location for all security data. Advanced data analysis capabilities over data in the data lake: Sentinel data lake stores all security data in an open format to enable analysts to do multi-modal security analytics on a single copy of data. Through the new data lake exploration experience in the Defender portal, customers can leverage Kusto query language to analyze historical data using the full power of Kusto. Since the data lake supports the Sentinel table schema, advanced hunting queries can be run directly on the data lake. Customers can also schedule long-running jobs, either once or on a schedule, that perform complex analysis on historical data for in-depth security insights. These insights generated from the data lake can be easily elevated to analytics tier and leveraged in Sentinel for threat investigation and response. Additionally, as part of the public preview, we are also releasing a new Sentinel Visual Studio Code extension that enables security teams to easily connect to the same data lake data and use Python notebooks, as well as spark and ML libraries to deeply analyze lake data for anomalies. Since the environment is fully managed, there is no compute infrastructure to set up. Customers can just install the Visual Studio Code extension and use AI coding agents like GitHub Copilot to build a notebook and execute it in the managed environment. These notebooks can also be scheduled as jobs and the resulting insights can be elevated to analytics tier and leveraged in Sentinel for threat investigation and response. Flexible business model: Sentinel data lake enables customers to separate their data ingestion and retention needs from their security analytics needs, allowing them to ingest and store data cost effectively and then pay separately when analyzing data for their specific needs. Let’s put this all together and show an example of how a customer can operationalize and derive value from the data lake for retrospective threat intelligence matching in Microsoft Sentinel. Network logs are typically high-volume logs but can often contain key insights for detecting initial entry point of an attack, command and control connection, lateral movement or an exfiltration attempt. Customers can now send these high-volume logs to the data lake tier. Next, they can create a python notebook that can join latest threat intelligence from Microsoft Defender Threat Intelligence to scan network logs for any connections to/from a suspicious IP or domain. They can schedule this notebook to run as a scheduled job, and any insights can then be promoted to analytics tiers and leveraged to enrich ongoing investigation, hunts, response or forensics analysis. All this is possible cost-effectively without having to set up any complex infrastructure, enabling security teams to achieve deeper insights. Globally, Marcel shares practical detection engineering insights on Microsoft Sentinel and Microsoft Defender XDR through forums and blog posts. Locally, he represents his employer in the IT-Security group of the Microsoft Business User Forum, where German companies using Microsoft technologies exchange real-world experience and expertise. The work Marcel values most is helping people enter the IT field. In Germany, "Fachinformatiker" is a recognized IT profession learned through a multi-year apprenticeship, and he is proud to have trained apprentices. He also serves as an examiner for the IHK (the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce), evaluating the final exams of these IT apprentices. This commitment also led him to support younger learners by teaching school cybersecurity classes and participating in Girls’ Day, where he introduced female students to the field. “I do this because most people don’t get an honest view of security work until much later in their education—if they see it at all. Showing someone early that this field is creative, varied, and genuinely interesting can change their path. Being part of that, even for a few people, means more to me than anything that fits neatly on a CV.” Let’s hear more from Marcel about his Microsoft Security Community and product paths. All responses to questions are direct quotes from Marcel. What do you find most rewarding about being a member of the Microsoft Security Community? The most rewarding part for me is how practical the exchange is. Microsoft security tooling moves fast - Microsoft Sentinel, Microsoft Defender XDR and Microsoft Security Copilot all change month to month- and no single person keeps up with all of it alone. The community is where that gap gets closed. When I read how someone else tuned a detection in their environment, or when someone responds to something I posted with a problem I hadn't considered, my own work gets better. It's a feedback loop you don't get from documentation. The other part I value is that it works in both directions: I started as a reader, learning from people more experienced than me, and now I'm at a point where I can give some of that back. Watching that shift happen has been genuinely motivating. How long have you been working with Microsoft Security Products? Over ten years! My way into Microsoft security ran through infrastructure rather than security itself. I started out administering Active Directory and VMware environments, the on-premises world, and that is where I first understood identity, endpoints and the quiet attack surface they create. At the time, security was something layered on top of infrastructure. What changed everything was the shift to the cloud. As the environments I worked in moved into Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365, the old separation between "running things" and "securing things" stopped making sense. In a cloud-first world, the identity is the perimeter, the sign-in log is the crime scene, and the telemetry that used to be scattered across servers suddenly lives in one place you could actually query. That was the moment Microsoft's security stack became less of a product set and more of a working environment for me. As I moved from running infrastructure into roles centered on defending it, first leading IT infrastructure and security as a team lead, then as an IT Security Expert, and now as IT Security Manager focused on architecture and incident response in an Azure and M365 environment, Sentinel and Defender XDR went from tools I knew of to tools I work in every day. The infrastructure background turned out to be an advantage rather than a detour. Detection engineering makes far more sense once you have run the Active Directory and the endpoints that generate the very signals you are now writing detections against, and cloud security makes far more sense once you have felt the limits of the on-premises model it replaced. The part that keeps me engaged is that none of this stands still. The cloud security landscape changes constantly, the work is never quite finished, and that is exactly what I like about it. What Microsoft Security features or products have provided the most impact? The single biggest impact for me comes from Microsoft Sentinel as a cloud-native SIEM and SOAR platform. The move away from a self-hosted SIEM matters more than it first appears. A traditional SIEM is itself a piece of infrastructure that has to be sized, hosted, patched, and scaled, and that effort constantly competes with the actual security work. Microsoft Sentinel removes that layer. There is no platform estate to keep alive and no capacity planning for the SIEM itself, which frees attention for what actually matters: getting the right telemetry in and getting detection and response right. What I value most is how naturally Sentinel fits into modern, cloud-first environments. When the landscape you are protecting already lives in Azure and Microsoft 365, a security platform that lives in the same place removes an entire class of integration friction. The other strength is the breadth of data onboarding. With a traditional SIEM, connecting a new log source was often a small project of its own, with connectors to build and parsers to maintain. With Sentinel, that friction is largely gone. Whether a source sits on-premises, in another cloud or in a third-party product, getting it in is straightforward, and the platform still provides the integration depth that genuinely matters rather than a shallow connection. Microsoft Sentinel handles almost anything you point it at. Equally important is that SIEM and SOAR are not two separate platforms here. The orchestration and automation layer is built into the same solution, so response playbooks run on the same data that the detections are built on. For architecture, that is a real advantage: detection and response are designed as one system rather than stitched together afterwards. The central telemetry layer is one of the few decisions that is genuinely hard to reverse later, and Sentinel makes that an easy one to defend. What advice do you have for others who would like to get involved in the Microsoft Community? My advice is to start before you feel ready. I read Microsoft Tech Community (forums) for years before I posted anything myself, always with the feeling that I needed more experience first, that I would just be adding noise. That was the wrong instinct. The moment I actually started contributing, the feedback I got back made my own work better, and I realised the bar for being useful is far lower than it looks from the outside. You do not need to be the leading expert on a topic. You need a real problem you have worked through and the willingness to write down how you solved it. Someone else is stuck on exactly that problem right now. Start small, stay consistent, and treat the community as an exchange rather than a stage.
