Is it normal for Windows to give an error with a new product key but still upgrade?
I tried to upgrade my new clean installed Windows 11 Home laptop to Windows 11 Education using a key that I got from Microsoft Azure for students (I already used this key once before on this laptop, but I clean installed it right now, so I'm using this key again on that same laptop). I entered the new key and it seemed to be working (it said installing upgrades) and when it got to 100% downloaded, it gave an error saying "We can't upgrade your edition of windows." So then I tried entering the product key again 2 more times, but then each time it gave another error saying "the product key you entered didn't work." So then I restarted my computer to hopefully fix the errors, but when I restarted, it got the regular black screen for updages, and it also said "adding features," so then it updated like that for only about a minute, and then booted up to normal Windows. I opened settings and it showed that Windows 11 Education was activated (with digital license to microsoft account). So then I entered the same product key one more time, and it said this copy of Windows has been successfully activated (even though it already was activated with Windows 11 Education after I restarted, which I don't know why it happened in the first place considering it gave an error?). It seems like all of the Education features are available though (like hyper-v and group policy). But why did this happen? Is Windows 11 Education successfully installed, or is it possible for it to be corrupted? What should I do? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Windows 11, Start button menu, make it show all apps by default
I upgraded to Windows 11 this week and I don't like the new Start button menu. I don't want "pinned" apps. I want to see All Apps in a list like before. Why don't we get the option to choose how we want things to look? So frustrating. Barbara
Why is everyone hating on Windows 11?
I’m genuinely curious why Windows 11 seems to get so much hate in some communities. I understand some of the common criticisms, such as Copilot, Microsoft account requirements, preinstalled apps, telemetry, and the new context menu. But from my perspective, many of these things can be worked around or customized. For example, you can bypass the account setup, remove unnecessary software, use local accounts, and tweak parts of the UI. That’s why I’m wondering: is the dislike mainly about Microsoft’s direction and defaults, or are there deeper technical or usability issues I’m missing? For context, I use different devices: a ThinkPad, a MacBook, and a windows gaming PC. I’ve been using Windows since XP, and even though I like macOS a lot, I sometimes miss the Windows experience. Maybe it’s partly nostalgia. I’m not trying to start a Mac vs. Windows debate. I’m just interested in understanding the perspective of people who strongly dislike Windows 11. Can't open the MP3 files when restoring from a system crash. It says the MP3 file is corrupted. Some won't play at all, others start fine but cut out or produce loud crackling noises partway through. The files are old recordings that can't be replaced so losing them entirely isn't an option. Tried reopening them in different media players hoping it was just a compatibility issue but the problem follows the files everywhere, which points to actual file damage rather than a playback issue. How can I repair MP3 files when corrupted on my Windows 11 PC?I hope the Windows 11 Task Manager will display information on video memory usage.
Currently, Task Manager already allows you to view detailed information such as GPU temperature, but the “Processes” tab still does not display the VRAM usage for each process. For games, you can use tools like RTSS, but in other scenarios, it would be much more convenient to view VRAM usage directly in Task Manager without relying on nvsmi or third-party tools. It doesn’t necessarily have to be as detailed as HWMonitor, but basic GPU memory monitoring should be sufficient. I’m not sure if there’s currently a way to enable this feature via the registry or ViVeTool.
Uncommon factory defects in embedded touchscreen controllers
My Windows 11 PC has a recurring issue with the embedded touchscreen controller, which appears to have an uncommon factory defect.
