Our software developemnt company uses both Yammer and Microsoft Teams. Based on our usage and understanding, we compared both as follow.

  • File Sharing: Teams is integrated with SharePoint Libraries so using Business One Drive, we could sync files with Teams on File Explorer. But integration of Yammer and SharePoint libraries isn't easy as we know of.
  • Cost: As of today, we should obtain a license for each user on Teams. However, Yammer can be shared with external and non-licensed users.
  • Rich Text Formatting: In Yammer, we can post only plain text. However on Teams, it's possible to color or bold your text. It's handy to emphasize the important stuff.
  • Tags: Yammer posts can be tagged (called topics on Yammer) easily. However on Teams, we could use only channel names as tags

Feel free to read more about our comparison on our blog, "Yammer vs Microsoft Teams".

I think you've got a good reflection of what it looked like in Feb 2017. However, nothing stands still in O365, so it's time to look again now that Yammer is connected to O365 Groups:

  • New Yammer groups now have a SharePoint library that should be sync-able just like a Teams' library.
  • Same with Planner and OneNote.
  • Yammer is about to launch post editing.
  • Yammer does have private messaging, which looks a bit like chat, but you're right that Teams is The Chat Tool in the O365 suite. If chat's your thing, then so is Teams.

I'm not sure about Yammer's plans for rich text formatting. They tried it once in an internal experiment, but it's tricky to do it right. If you allow for too much, a feed gets hard to read. There's a reason that Facebook doesn't allow it, and it hasn't hurt their adoption.

Yammer have rich text in their roadmap, Teams have guest user access in theirs, I don't think there are going to be non-functional differences in the future.

Yammer=Facebook, Teams = WhatsApp - they are best at different types of communication.

I don't see things as a Teams vs. Yammer; I see how both can be used for different functions.  Teams is similar to emailed distribution lists, in that the content creator determines who the audience is, by selecting the set group of people addressed.  Yammer allows for content to be created without a determined audience, but marked (via group) as appropriate for a topic or a certain set of interests.

Yammer is better for open strategic discussions which allow anyone with knowledge or interest to contribute or consume.  Teams is better for tactical collaboration for individual packages of work or activity.

Really the key feature difference between the two is the curation of the audience.  All the other feature differences are relatively trivial in comparison.  You can give me content in which I'm not interested in pretty fonts and flashing gifs, and I remain uninterested; you can give me content in which I'm intereseted typewritten on wrinkled paper and I'll read it.  In this age of more content created every hour than one person can consume in a lifetime (at least that's how it seems), I suggest this as a very important driver of value, to assist in connecting content creators and consumers appropriately.

Incidentally, why is your username just "social"?

To me, this comparison only deals with half at best of what both platforms have to offer. There's content and curation, nurturing and engagement, collaborating and building, and so many use cases on hand depending on what you're looking to do.

If I were a person just getting started with choosing platform to focus on, or which to roll out first, this wouldn't really tell me the "Why." And maybe that's not that point of your piece; I'm not sure.

You say: "Based on our usage and understanding"--how is your org using Yammer and Teams to collaborate, solve problems, share insights? That's the missing piece that I want to know. Because in the end, it's about people, not the platform.

Thanks for sharing your observations. In my experience, Yammer caters to the curious by being open by default. Teams is a step in the open direction. Organizations benefit from open information flows and intentional listening.
Preach it, Becky! My head was down in the feature details this morning, but you've hit on the much more important issues.

Hi,

I just wanted to ask I noticed that when you upload a file in Yammer it does not copy the file to SharePoint the same way Teams does to the General folder that is created. Do files have to be manually downloaded to the Yammer SharePoint site or did I overlook something?

Thank you.

What is the status of this in Yammer?  It is not clear to me that Yammer is connected to Groups in our tenant?  Do i have to "turn it on"?  We are First Release at the tenant level.

How can i figure this out?

Rob.

You have to have a 1:1 domain:network relationship, and enforce O365 identity. Here's the details. https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Yammer-and-Office-365-Groups-d8c239dc-a48b-47ab-b85e-6b4b81...

Thanks for the reply!  We have all settings set that way (always have), are FR, but still no O365 Group integration. I will open a ticket.

The help desk informed me that First Release is not all rolled out yet. Maybe by the end of March. I could swear I read here or somewhere that FR was done by end of Feb. My ticket was SRX617031092975637ID.

I guess I will wait a few more weeks!

I have the same question. Why my name is social. On personal info page, I have my name. But doesn't show up here.

I already spent 30 mins to setup just a name but why setting a name should be that complicated?

If you give some idea how to set the name, I appreciate it.

As of now, any file you upload to Yammer is not shown on SharePoint library or site. You should manually upload the file to SharePoint. That's one reason we preferred Teams over Yammer

The Yammer team has made it clear this is a temporary state and that files added to Yammer posts will at some point be stored in the associated SP site. I don't think they've provided a date. For now, they are stored in Azure.
