Yammer Data storage locations

Contributor

Hi

I understand that Yammer data isn't held within the EU.This provides EU customers a compliance issue.  Are there any plans to bring the data storage to within the EU (Amsterdam or Dublin)?

maybe @Angus Florance can answer?

I'm pretty sure that you can request all of your Yammer data to be brought into the EU.  As of several months ago, Yammer is EU Model Clause compliant.

I'm not very familiar with what that all entails, but I remember reading the announcement some months ago.

Here's more information:

Now that Yammer is part of the Office 365 Trust Center (as of February 2016), You can see where your data is located on this Map provided by the Trust Center.

Thanks @Tom Kretzmer & @Lana O'Brien...

@Alistair Trigg ... You are right that today we only have Yammer data stored in the US, however we do have plans to allow for user generated data to reside in same location that their Office 365 tenant is. As you can imagine this is a huge amount of work but we have started to make progress towards that goal. Right now we don't have specific timelines to share publicly.

You will start to see some of this though as we integrate into the Office 365 Groups service in the next couple of months. A simple example would be that files that you store in the Yammer Group's SharePoint library, will be located in their Office 365 tenant.

Thank you Angus!

Hi

Thanks for the answer. Just want we want to hear

Yammer has a privacy policy using the model clauses that the EU data protection laws prefer, but the data is still located in the USA. You should check with your own legal position, but I work for a UK company and this is adequate to meet our requirements under the UK DPA.

Hi @Angus Florance, can you provide an update on the Yammer data location in Europe?

Any news on this?

Yes, you will find some info on:

"We are pleased to announce that we will be rolling out a highly requested capability for customers outside the U.S. to store their Yammer messaging data regionally. Currently in preview, we are rolling out local data residency starting with new customers in Europe in the first half of 2018, with other regions and rollout to existing customers to follow."

Is it now possible to store the yammer data in the eu?

We've had to take a different approach to this but still very much committed to hosting Yammer message data in the EU. We'll have updating timelines to share at Ignite in September.

Having said that, we will have file uploads stored in SharePoint by default (for connected groups) available globally in August.

Hi

Could I just ask for a little clarification. When you mention sharepoint documents being rolled out in August does that mean that any documents held within Yammer are effectively stored within SharePoint and therefore will be held regionally from August?

Thanks

Alistair

That's exactly right. You'll need to have Office 365 connected group in Yammer for this to work but once that's enabled, any files uploaded to Yammer will be stored in your Office 365 SPO tenant.

Hi Angus,

Any update on Yammer chat hosting?

Your last update was in July - wondering if there has been any progress?
