I have an external yammer group setup.  It works fine from the yammer app people can see it etc.  From the yammer webpart though it doesn't show external users the conversation (even if those users or office 365 from another tenant).  Not sure why this is, it seems to work otherwise, again they can get access to the conversation from the yammer app directly.

We are really trying to make things easy for the users to allow them just to go to the SharePoint site and be able to participate without having to open more apps, etc.   Is this a limitation of the SharePoint webpart? is there a any work around for this to get something like this to work?

Solution

Hi @Jeff Williams ,

From memory this is because external users are not signed in across multiple Apps or site collections.  For example an external user cannot see news from another site collection surfaced in a News Webpart.  Same thing for Yammer.

thanks for the reply.  i will have to do some more testing.  We ran into something similar with the events web part (but this was fixed by using the highlighted content webpart) but it looked like the news webpart was working.  But this may explain it.  I also get a little confused as guest vs external user (could be the term is interchangeable)  but all the users are guest to the office 365 group (yammer).  and that group has member permissions in SharePoint.  But what i think you are saying then is what is happening is that with guest/external users when they go to the SharePoint page they don't authenticate to yammer as well.  But if they were a normal internal user that is happening.  Seems weird to me they do it differently.

The guest vs external user is confusing.  To customers all users not working for the organisation are external users but in SharePoint/Yammer/Teams they are guest users. I have never setup external users yet, I think there are very specific scenarios where this is applicable. As far as I know its about federating another organisation's AD with yours.

It just seems like a miss.  the have guest access.  It works.  If people go to individual SharePoint sites it works. they have access to content, etc.  But then you want to make a more dynamic experience using webparts and the things you use to build that.  Hub sites pulling in data from the connected sites and it just doesn't display.  Feels so much like it was a half implementation.  especially for us on the yammer piece.  we are trying to move a conversation over from facebook groups to have a little better control.  seemed like everything should work access to the items worked in tests.  then we start building out more dynamic engaging pages for the the users and it just seems to instantly negate everything.

Hi @Jeff Williams ,

I agree, I was surprised when I realised that was an issue when I was building out some sites.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was either a technical challenge associated with the way guest users are stored in the various Apps or something that wasn't built due to not wanting to provide too much functionality to guest users so they are more likely to buy their own tenant.

well even if a guest has their own tenant, which some of our guests do it appears there is the same thing.  I am even willing to assign licenses to the guests if it would make it work.  But there is no way to allow them to have their email as a login.  Before there was guest access we created users for everyone, and them having a login with email on our domain was an issue. they did get notifications, invites, etc.  and even getting them to log in took some resources because they didn't understand the email address.  I would be okay if we could work around this when needed by assigning licenses to guests.  but that isn't possible.

Anyway, marking your response as answer because i do believe this is what is going on.

I did a test in Google Browser, but everything's fine and I can't reproduce your problem.

In addition, the phenomenon of image blur seems to be widespread, I can see that many users are facing the same problem.

The image I uploaded was also vague.

In this regard I suggest you create service request s to contact Office 365 support:

are you using an external/guest user account when you log in to view the sharepoint page that has a yammer webpart.  The webpart itself doesn't render the conversation at all.  they user is shown a message that says something along the lines of new to yammer click here to join.  if the user click the link they go to yammer itself and they can see the group/community and conversation.  Going back to SharePoint though the conversation never renders.

it doesn't have anything to do with it being blurred of anything like that.
