Who is in your group?  Sure you can just look in the UI.  (This is what it looks like)

SGM1.png

No problem.  If you would like a list to review, you could always start typing, or maybe copy and paste (with a whole lot of scrolling).  Sounds like fun…  OR, you can do this.  It’s a tiny bit convoluted if you’re not used to these things, but Yammer has a LOT of lovely little tools like this which not many Community Managers seem to take advantage of.  If you managed to find this, you can be one of the powerful few who do.  :)

(Note:  This only works for the first 50 members of your group.  To get more, we need to do more complicated stuff, but this is great for smaller groups to consolidate them.  To do more than 50, keep reading past the closing credits.)

First step (Step 1) is to get the number of your group.  This number is how the group is called by Yammer, no matter what its actual name.  It’s in the top URL of the group when you’re looking at it, and it’s also in the details when you highlight the group name on the left navigation.

Ok, hopefully a picture is worth a thousand words:

SGM2.png

Now that you have the group number, we’re ready to do something interesting (Step 2).  At the top of your browser, enter this line:

https://www.yammer.com/api/v1/users/in_group

Then, before you hit enter, put in the number we just got in Step 1, above.  So in this case, we’re entering https://www.yammer.com/api/v1/users/in_group/5172067.  For good measure, add a period and the letters, “json”, so that it now looks like this:

SGM3.png

Hit enter and immediately the browser will ask you where you want to save your file:

SGM4.png

Personally, I choose Save As and rename the file to something I would remember, but you can do this any way you’d like.  Save the file to a location you’ll remember.

SGM5.png

Now you’ve downloaded your group membership list to a file.  However, this file looks like gibberish if you try to load it.  (It’s called JSON, not surprisingly, but we want a spreadsheet.)

We have room before the page break so here’s a picture of the gibberish in Notepad.

SGM6.png

See?  Not particularly useful.

Go to a JSON to CSV converter site – there are many.  I’ll show you this one:  https://json-csv.com/

Go to that link, click Upload, and select the file you downloaded.  This would be Step 3, converting to CSV.

Handy dandy screenshot:

SGM7.png

Woah!  Did you see that?  Instant gratification!  Your group’s users all listed out in gridded glory.  Go ahead and click Download and save the file as a CSV.  (Step 4)

SGM8.png

Again, I use Save As so I can find the thing later and I can name it as I like.

SGM9.png

Ok, now you’re almost done.  Browse to that directory and open the file up in Excel.  Format it the way you like, and then save it as an Excel Workbook:

SGMa.png

All done, in 5 easy steps!

  1. Get group number.
  2. Fire off the API call to get your group members rendered to a JSON file.
  3. Convert the JSON file to a CSV file.
  4. Save the CSV file.
  5. Convert the CSV file to an Excel Workbook.

Congrats!  You can now tell all your friends that you performed a REST call into the Yammer API to render the group members as a JSON file.  And then when they look at you all confused, you can open up the spreadsheet and show them.  I don’t know exactly what it all means, either, except that now I have a list of people and I can invite them to other groups, I can email them, I can use this for group membership migration or consolidation, or I can just impress my friends.

(This originally appeared 14 April, 2016 on the Office 365 Network.  Since then I've found that you can do exactly this, only use the extension .xml instead of .json, and then open the .xml file in Excel directly, without the third party tool)

More than 50 user bonus round:

So like I said in the beginning, you can do more than 50, but it’s a little bit more complicated.  The data only comes in 50-user long “pages”.  So to get page 2, you need to add these characters:

“?page=2”.

So in this example, the full URL would be:

https://www.yammer.com/api/v1/users/in_group/5172067.json?page=2

Again, save the file, obviously name it in a way that lets you know its page 2, and go on.

At this point it’s kind of up to you how you would like to progress.  Personally I use Excel to make a full grid of the commands with all the pages, save them as predictable numbers, and use the old DOS copy command with the plus symbol to concatenate all the files.  Remember that JSON and CSV are actually just plain text files and you can mash them together just by copying them as one file.

Copy page1.csv + page2.csv + page3.csv YammerBugs.csv

That’s the command-line command to make those first three files merge into that last one.  It will duplicate the headers.  So maybe better idea is to merge all the JSON files first and then turn that one big JSON into one big CSV.  Again, a big complicated, which is why I left this information at the end.

Tx for sharing this method.

I followed your instructions, but when I get to "Hit enter and immediately the browser will ask you where you want to save your file" I get the results displayed in the browser (IE11 or Chrome) and don't get the option to Save a file ... am I missing something?

great experience! thanks a lot for sharing!

With .json at the end or .xml? The default behavior in IE is to open .xml files.  For that you might be better making a link in a word document or something and right clicking and doing a save target as.

Highlighted

It doesn't matter whether I use .json or .xml, the results are displayed into the browser.

Here a tiny powershell script to extract the list of member https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/Yammer/How-to-extract-the-list-of-Group-members-as-a-CSV-file..., quite usefull when your group have 3000 members and as a result you have 60 pages of 50 user to manage manually ;)

Excellent article - thanks for this.

Is there a way to export ALL network users with this data? It seems there are more columns available via the API rather than the internal export options within Yammer.

Highlighted

I'm sure there's a way.  If I was asked to do this, I would do an export to get all of my non-deleted group ID's, and then use that list to perform @Eric JENOUVRIER's method iteratively for each group.

Does that make sense?

Another option is to do the same export, only this time get all your non-deleted user ID's.  Then, through script, perform https://www.yammer.com/api/v1/users/:User_Id.json (or even better, https://www.yammer.com/api/v1/users/:User_Id.xml) on each of them and save the result.

Documentation is here:  https://developer.yammer.com/docs/usersidjson.

Hi. This didn't work for me. Nothing happens. No error, no page load. Nada. Any ideas?

The browser window you're entering this into might not be "aware" of your Yammer session.

Try this.  Leave this browser window open, and in a separate window, go to your Yammer network using either Internet Explorer or Chrome.

Go to the group you want to analyze.

In your address bar, highlight everything up to the feedid= bit.  Here's a screenshot:

GroupExport1.jpgThen, come back to this screen, and highlight and copy this string:

https://www.yammer.com/api/v1/users/in_group/

Go back over to that screen and hit paste, right over all that:

GroupExport2.jpg

Then, hit enter.  At the bottom of the browser you should get a mini popup saying that your broswer is trying to download something.  That's the file to which I'm referring in the original article.

Please let me know if that helps at all.  We can figure out what's going on.  :)
