, General Information for a Yammer beginner

New Contributor

Hello, everybody,

I'm still relatively new to the yammer topic and have a few general questions that I hope you can answer:

  • As far as I understand it, the whole patch management for Yammer is done by Microsoft, including security & feature updates, if that's the case can I somehow prevent it or delay it for a certain time, similar to Win10/O365
    • Can I see the current version number of Yammer somewhere ?
  • Do the security updates come every month or sporadically as soon as they are available ?
  • Do feature updates come every 6 months or sporadically as soon as they are available ?
  • Are there patchnotes so I can follow the changes ?

Thank you for your time and effort

Dennis

No, Yammer is an ever-evolving cloud service, so there is no need for version numbers, Yammer is being improved constantly, sometimes with small updates and more recently with the New Yammer launch bigger improvements. There isn't a way to defer updates but you can receive updates sooner with Targeted release, though this can vary depending on the service.

Being a cloud service, you don't worry about security updates, these are applied as and when needed.  Yammer isn't on a 6-month feature release schedule, new features will be released when they are ready. Office 365 ProPlus does have a 6-month feature release with the Semi-Annual Channel, if that's what you are thinking of, which isn't related to Yammer development. Yammer apps release notes are here.

The best way to follow Yammer changes is the Yammer blog and the Microsoft 365 roadmap with the Yammer filter selected.  For Office 365 admins there is the Message Center, which will also show changes to the Yammer service.  This may be a useful read, as well as the section on evergreen and what it means.

Check out some last year's Ignite sessions for good broad info on Yammer and it's direction, like this one.   Hope that helps.

@Dennis_Ewald Just adding the Yammer Adoption Resources if you haven't seen them already, all sorts of useful guidance if you are looking into using Yammer more or learning more about it.

@Dennis_Ewald Adding to the answer/context, Yammer is very similar to the other online productivity platforms in Office 365 in this regard, such as SharePoint Online, OneDrive for Business, Planner, etc.
