We want to have chatting capabilities inside our sharepoint online site, this chatting will be an organization chat to share ideas, discuss certain events, etc... now sharepoint provide 2 main approaches for chatting:-

1. using the classic discussion board lists. but this appraoch is old and does not fit with the new office-365 world.

2. creating modern pages and rely on their commenting capabilities. but commenting on modern pages have many limitations such as; any user can delete other comments and deleted comments will not get stored inside recycle bins + when backup sharepoint online sites or migrate them all the tools will not support backup/migrate comments on modern pages(because seems comments on mdoern pages are stored on external one-drive site !).

so we settle on using yammer. but seems there are 2 ways to integrate yammer with sharepoint:-

1. First appraoch. by defualt we can create new yammer groups as follow:-

yzmmer1.png

- then using the the yammer modern web part, we can embed the yammer inside sharepoint pages as follow:-

teagroru[.png

2. Second appraoch. Is that we can configure yammer to provision a sharepoint site, using the Office 365 Identity Enforcement >> Enforce Office 365 identity .

so based on the above i have the following 2 questions:-

1. Inside office 365 i always like to go with the simple appraoch, So I am feel more comfortable with appraoch one, as i will not create a link between yammer & SP & Office-365-Groups, which can have its own complexity in managing them. so can i go with appraoch one (create a yammer group then embed it inside SP modern page), or i will loose lot of features? again we need to build a chat for our company so users can chat about some idea and project , etc..

2. if we create a yammer group without connecting yammer with Office-365-groups, then can we later on enforce office 365 identity on existing yammer groups? or we do not have this flexibility ?

Thanks

Hi @John John

I would say that the approach to Yammer Identity Enforcement, and what option you should pick should be dependent on how you want to use Microsoft Teams and if you would prefer Teams to be part of Office 365 groups.

It is known that once you enforce Yammer Identity and start creating Office 365 groups via Yammer you cannot add Teams to these Office 365 groups. Many have been caught out by this - see article

https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/Yammer/Adding-Microsoft-Teams-feeds-into-Yammer/td-p/329891

https://sharepointmaven.com/20-ways-to-create-an-office-365-group/

In other words, you have a choice of whether you have Teams connected and creating the Office 365 Groups and use the SharePoint Web Part (Option 1) or Yammer connected groups (Option 2)

Personally, I would always recommend option 1 for simplicity. This is also default behaviour within the 365 tenant. Option 2 is not default behaviour and you will end up with two sets of Office 365 groups, ones connected through Yammer which do not contain Teams and ones created through Teams which do not contain Yammer.

Hope that clarifies and helps to answer your question

@Christopher Hoardthis is very helpful reply. i would say that i want the Office-365-groups to have teams and not yammer. so will be creating independent yammer groups and embed them inside sharepoint (using yammer web part) and embed them inside teams (desktop app) using external link.. what do you think?

Thanks

Solution
That is exactly correct! That is how I would do it. Hopefully in the future we will see the unification of them all.

Glad I helped to answer your question @John John
