We want to be able to invite people to our Yammer network and add them to a group at the same time. This enables our community managers (group admins) to quickly get new people started on their own.

AddNonMember.jpgI've confirmed that we can add new members who have not yet joined our network by using the bulk add (import from address book) and their email address; however, I'd like them to be able to do this one at a time as well. It appears that the "invite" button was removed from the Add Members dialog box in a group. Is this a bug?

Hey Diane,

Can you confirm you are an admin of the group you are trying to add members to? Do the group settings allow for anyone to join?

Also, is this an external network, or your home network? There's been a long-standing / recurring bug with external networks where invitees don't receive network join requests if they're invited to a group before they join the network.
Yes, I'm an admin. Yes, the group is public and allows anyone to join.
This is a home network. The problem is the button doesn't show up at all. I've checked with other admins and they agree that it used to be there.

Agreed. Appears to have been removed, which forces you to add them to the network first. Bummer.

Default groups for everyone entering the network. Clever idea!

Strange. I am looking in my home network, and it looks like I can still add people to a specific group either one at a time, or through bulk update to the entire network.

Default groups is a cool idea. I've seen some admins set up a workaround to accomplish this by setting up a keyword search for 'joined the network'. Then it just becomes a community mgmt task to add the new members to a Welcome group.

Another way is through the data export, have a regular cycle, say weekly, of exporting all users, and selecting those with the joined_at date after the last cycle run.  Take all the new users, and bulk add them to your default group(s).

Downside is that you may get some negative feedback from people who didn't want the notifications. But that's how we've enabled default groups.  Works very well for information / conversation which everyone should be able to access, but doesn't rate all-company emails.

That's a pretty manual process. Other ESNs support this scenario more elegantly. While I see both sides of the argument I would rather know they opted out of a few key default groups rather than relying on awareness somehow making its way to everyone.

Sorry if I'm missing something obvious, but if you're doing one-at-a-time invitations to a group of people who haven't yet joined the network, doesn't that just involve typing the email address into the members line and seeing a drop-down that would issue an invitation if clicked? Apologies that I can't test this for you easily, as everyone I know at Cargill *has* joined our network (because hey, it's hard to be that much in contact with me, and not take at least that step).

@Noah Sparks, which ones?

The administration tools of Yammer are not its strength.  For most tasks, there is at least a clunky way to get it done.  Most of the development has been on making it more collaborative, particularly with non-addressed-to people (serendipitous discovery), along with better integration with the Office 365 suite.  Elegant administration seems to be lower down on the prioprity list.

Workplace specifically. Admins can designate default groups for all new joiners with the option to add all current community members to the group. All of this gets really cloudy for me when we start exploring O365 Groups integration. Lots of complexity to manage through.

I'd be interested in learning long-term intentions around Yammer administration. My conversations continue to surface a real need for deep insights from analytics. I'd love to tell them they're included in the platform.

Strange. I am looking in my home network, and it looks like I can still add people to a specific group either one at a time, or through bulk update to the entire network.

I just verified that I still don't have an invite button for people who haven't created a Yammer account yet.

That's what I expected, Melanie, but I can no longer do this in my network. When I type in the person's email address, I have no drop downs or options to invite them. We are rolling out a new network to our field force, and very few have been invited yet. For business reasons, we have to take a phased approach to adding them. We have a few communities (groups) started, and we want to give our community managers a simple way to add people to their group and the network at the same time.

What would also be cool would be if I could use the API somehow, because we already have a request form that automatically turns on the user's Yammer license. If it could go ahead an invite them to the group, it would be incredibly sweet. I shan't hold my breath though.

Good news, Diane! If scripting this is an option, there's an API for sending a network invite https://developer.yammer.com/docs/invitationsjson and another one that adds a member to a group (and sends a network invite if they're not already a member) https://developer.yammer.com/docs/group_membershipsjsongroup_idid

The latter could only be executed with admin credentials to work for your scenario.

We use a method similar to the one suggested by @Chris Slemp to populate groups based on profile information. Really helps with the on boarding process to offer them a couple of destinations based on their preferences.

Using code you can use a service account (to add people rather than giving people admin rights) and log its usage (+how many people they add etc.). Might reveal some useful behaviours

I'm seeing this same problem now too, Diane, and I'm opening a ticket. I need to be able to add an individual at will to a Yammer group... that's basic functionality!

Diane, first quick return from the ticket I opened... Type in the one email address then add a semicolon immediately after it. The interface CHANGES and the updated screen allows you to invite that individual. Stay tuned, I'm pushing to learn more about this and hope a fix will be forthcoming, since that's about as non-intuitive as UI could get.
