REST API Yammer Stats - Updates

Have searched here for "yammer stats updates" and "by_email" but cant see this question already posted. If you make a call to the REST API /by_email for a user you get back (amongst other things) a "stats" object. This objects looks like this:

"stats": {
"following": 6,
"followers": 6,
"updates": 0
},

Following and Followers are always correct. For any user on our network "updates" is always 0. What is updates? I've tried posting, comment, adding topics, editing my profile, etc. but it never increases. Is it deprecated functionality?
