We are new to O365 and I have lots of staff asking about the future of Yammer since MS Teams has gone live.

Mind me asking what the nature of the questions are? Have they experienced both tools? How large is your organization?

What questions are your staff asking? We still see Yammer as the primary place where people in your company can connect broadly across the organization. Teams is about the team and not necessarily open to the whole organization. Here's a blog post I wrote that might help with the distinction. https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/among-email-microsoft-teams-yammer-still-has-its-place-steve-nguyen?t...

If it helps David, in my company we're focusing on Yammer as our wider open community platform whilst looking at using teams/groups for smaller collaboration areas like projects (And teams!).

For example we have a variety of technical network groups created in Yammer to connect our knowledge areas, we have regional yammer groups to connect regions together, we use an innovation group to capture and share ideas, social groups to connect interests etc.

We are then looking at Teams for project delivery for small-medium sized teams within the company which probably wouldn't be suited to a closed space in Yammer.

I would agree with Microsoft's guidance on this.

MS Teams is oriented around smaller groups of people who have a high volume of messages. Project or development teams are the prototypes. The messages are generally more ephemeral, though of course one of the key benefits of Teams is the persistent nature of the chat messages, available for browsing and searchig in the past.

Yammer lends itself better to communities of interest where the message volume is less, or when the audience is larger. Executive engagement, communications, birds of a feather.  The conversations in the entire network are searchable. Key/active discussions are surfaced on the Yammer home page.

There are lots of strengths with Yammer's approach to communities.

I had some folks reading articles which suggested to them that Yammer was on the way out.

There is also confusion on conversation in Teams, Yammer and Groups. To new users, this seems like three ways to do the same thing.

Hi Nick,

Yes, I've been drawing those distinctions between small and large groups. It still seems confusing for staff to have multiple conversation options since this is our first entry into any kind of enterprise social.

Just as you have multiple ways to have conversations in your personal life (chat, email, feed), those three modes are available at work for different kinds of teams. Conversation is the heartbeat of your work, so choose the conversation modality that works for your team, and the other workloads (file storage, notes, planning boards, etc.) will be available.

The key is positioning each type of conversation suiting a different need. We've had "forums" for nearly as long as email and chat, but they've never really taken off in the work context... until enterprise social, which at its heart is really forums evolved.

Small organization, 1000 users and very new to O365.

Yammer's very visible presence at the SharePoint product update last week should be excellent evidence refuting those "Yammer is on the way out" opinion pieces.

Thanks for the article link, I like the connection with people you don't know!

Redefining the work experience for scalable learning is what Yammer excels at. More thoughts here from John Hagel on this topic.
