Hi Team,

Is there any movement towards Unified Office 365 Groups? Yammer connected groups are awesome however I find that many customers don't go for them because of their impact on Teams.

Having Unified Office 365 Groups going forward would be immense.

Best, Chris

Hey, @Christopher Hoard -- what is the behavior you're hoping to see us have?

Solution

@Christopher Hoard Guess that what you are looking for is an Office 365 Group that has all of the following?

Yammer group

MS Team team

Outlook Distribution List

I'd also add calendar... in addition to everything you get with a O365 group now (planner, onenote, stream, SP, etc.).

@Christopher Hoard What I've heard repeatedly from Microsoft is that this is technically challenging.

Ideally what you'd really want is "ala carte" services attached to O365 Groups - because I can assure you that if a new Yammer group was created when someone created an MS Team or an O365 Groups SharePoint site then a lot of people would NOT like that. Which means that the UI and infrastructure to support enabling/disabling the various services is pretty complicated.

Sure - and your right. I guess I find that it seems to make organisations - at least here in the UK go with either Yammer or Teams because Yammer connected groups do not provision Teams, and standard Office 365 groups provision Teams and not the Yammer group. Admins seem to avoid having to manage two sets of groups, or to put it another way the service which doesn't align under the Office 365 group. One of the questions I hear regularly is why this has to be the case. I know the reasons why this is the case in terms of provisioning and functionality, but I just think from feedback that many people would like to see them together within an Office 365 group.

@Christopher Hoard Thank you for bringing up this scenario. If you had an Office 365 Group that was enabled for both Yammer and Outlook at the same time, or Yammer and Microsoft Teams, what type of content would be posted to Yammer vs Teams or Yammer vs Outlook Mail/Calendar? How do you see the users interacting with the combination of services across communities, mail, calendar, and chat? I'm trying to get a sense of the use case for how members would be leveraging the combination of services when connected to the same group.
