page numbers at begining of document is not working right and the last page.

The document was fine, but when I uploaded to publish my cover page went on the right side of book, which is fine, but I had other issues in my formatting so when I went to redue the book I added a first page so my formatting would be right. But then my page numbers would not stay off the first few pages, and I put different first page, but it was still wrong page, so I tried to put page break with the blank page and cover page, then I got the rest of the document (my book) to do right but the number 3 came up on my cover page and if I remove it then all the numbers in the whole document also leave.  I have tried everything, but don't know how to fix it. I also have a last page that would not leave, and it has a 0 on it, but a Microsoft person said I had to leave it because of the old formatting I moved it from my really old Word to the new 365 word.  That is not so much of a problem. But the numbers on the front I need help with. Thank you!

See Numbering Front Matter by Suzanne Barnhill, MVP .

That may be all you need.

Background:

  • Page numbers in Word are fields. They are not numbers that you type.
  • They are placed in footers (or sometimes headers).
  • Headers and footers are parts of Word sections and every section has three header parts and three footer parts, which may or may not be used depending on the options set. Each of these parts is independent of the others. (see recap for less confusion and more information)
  • When a new section is started, by default, each of these parts is linked or connected to the same kind of part in the preceding section. They can each be linked or unlinked from that part. If linked, the same part operated in both sections.  What gets carried over when you start a new section?
