No version history available

My partner has an emergency situation.

She's lost a lot of work on her laptop overnight in a word document.

Yet when we check "version history" there is nothing there?

She's had to save locally as she'd had to work in environments away from the internet?

How can we get this functionality back?

Unfortunately, there isn't much that can be done. Ask your partner to search for files with the *.asd extension and try to open these from within Word. That might give the opportunity to salvage some content (but don't hold your breath). 

Version History is only supported for files that are saved to / synchronized with OneDrive.
