I can't open word with Docx extension but I have no problem with doc extension

Dear All, 

I am here asking for help, I have synced SharePoint library on my laptop, I can open word file with docx extension online through browser but I can't open the same file on my computer. 

Word.docx can't be open it on my laptop but no problem online 

word.doc file can open online and on my computer. 

Please note that i have office 365 applications

Please help me sort this out.

If you start Word first (the locally installed version), then can you open *.docx files from within Word, via File > Open > Browse?
