Custom Number Formatting and Styles Controlled Centrally

Copper Contributor

Is it possible for an MS Admin to create some custom number formatting and/or Styles, and make the available to all users?

I'm trying to get people across the organisation to use consistent numbering and styles, so wondered if custom versions can be set up as an option in the drop down Numbering/Styles list if set by an Admin? Then they can be easily selected.

You should create a template that contains the required numbering and styles and make the template available to all users.

See the article "How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in your Microsoft Word document" on the following page of the Late Shauna Kelly's website:

There is also a wealth of information on Shauna's website about Styles and Templates.

@AJHezzleUnfortunately, you can't really edit that dropdown. Better is good Workgroup Templates which tie numbering to styles as set forth in the Shauna Kelly article along with other useful styles. Train your users to avoid those numbering options completely.

You could, as administrator, remove the numbering buttons from the Home Tab if you want, but you do need access to the Define New MultiLevel list dialog to set up your numbering.

It is possible to have a Global Template that contains numbering styles that can be imported. See A Global StyleSheet in Microsoft Word? An example can be found in my downloads: A Global StyleSheet in Microsoft Word?  Unfortunately, [Quick] Style Sets do not work for numbering.
