Caption Auto-Numbering Question

Copper Contributor

In Word, you can set captions(Figures, Tables, and Equations) to be auto-numbered based on existing captions so that if you already have figure 1 on the page, adding a second figure after makes it the second figure "figure 2" and so on. This default numbering system doesn't account for some paper formats where the numbering is a two-digit number where the first number relates to the chapter and the second number is the figure in that chapter, such as five figures being split between two chapters with the numbering 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.1 and 2.2. Is there any way to modify the default numbering sequence to account for this type of formatting?

Thanks,

In the Caption dialog box (References tab > Insert Caption), click the Numbering button to access the Caption Numbering dialog box. Select "Include chapter number" and choose a heading style, such as Heading 1.

The requirement is that you are making use of the selected heading style in the document and that the headings have auto-numbering applied to them (see https://shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/numbering20072010.html).
