Greetings word experts,
Thanks for reading this.
I have created custom styles for use in a script document.
I've created a "Chapter" style which is based on heading 1, and a "Topic" style which is based on heading 2. Both are set to use numbering with the text "Chapter x" and "Topic x" respectively where "x" is the auto number. This way, if I decide to move chapters or topics around the document my numbering remains correct and is updated automatically.
My challenge is having the topic number auto-restart to 1 for each new chapter.
Currently, when I start a new chapter and then start a new topic, the topic numbering continues from the last chapter.
I can correct it manually for each chapter, but I'm wondering if there is a way for an auto-restart after encountering a 'higher level' heading as part of the style definition.
Your help will be appreciated, and have a great day!

SolutionThis may be done using mulitlevel list numbering or using SEQ fields.
You would want your topic numbering to be level 2.
If using list numbering, each level must be attached to a different paragraph style.

@Charles_Kenyon
Thanks for the tip!
I will read it carefully and implement it.
Have a great day. 🙂

I did as the article suggested and it works great!
The only challenge I encountered was that once I removed my custom paragraph styles from being based on the original heading styles, they disappeared from the navigation pane.
A quick google search came up with the root cause that their outline level was set back to the default and all I had to do was manually change the outline level back to 1 and 2 respectively, and all is good!

Hi @Charles_Kenyon and all readers of this thread.
I've encountered another challenge that I was unable to solve with the help of BinGoogle.
Now that I have my custom styles and numbering lists all set up and working, I need to find a way to be able to create in-document hyperlinks to these new paragraph styles.
When I use the "insert hyperlink" window and click "place in this document", only the original headings are shown, and the bookmarks list is empty.
Is there a style setting that will tell word to automatically add my custom headings to the available heading list for link insertion, or alternatively automatically create a bookmark for every instance of my custom styles?
Thanks for your help and have a great day!

To get the best answers, this really should be posted as a new question, perhaps with a link back here.
The built-in heading styles in Word have some special or magical properties. One of those is that they can show up as targets for cross-references.
If you cannot use the built-in heading styles, your workaround would be to manually add bookmarks to the headings. (Word does this automatically for you when you cross-reference to one of the built-in headings.

Thank @Charles_Kenyon 🙏
So it’s not feasible… ☹️
You’re right, if I have a follow up question I will open a new thread.
have a great day!
