Windows Server 2022 Licensing

Occasional Contributor

Hi,

I'm a newbie here. My requirement is to run an application on a Windows server and 15 users are accessing that application.

02 Windows Servers OS 2022 - One server will be used as a web server other will be used to deploy the DB and the application.

01 MSSQL Server.

From the 02 windows servers, one server will have 04 cores and the other server will have 02 cores.

I wanted to know what kind of licensing I need to perform this operation smoothly.

Thank you all in advance.

***Some general info***
- Each host needs to be licensed.
- A minimum of 8 core licenses is required for each physical processor and a minimum of 16 core licenses is required for each server.
- Core licenses are sold in packs of two.
- Standard Edition provides rights for up to 2 Operating System Environments or Windows Servers containers with Hyper-V isolation when all physical cores in the server are licensed. For each additional 1 or 2 VMs, all the physical cores in the server must be licensed again.
- DataCenter Edition provides rights for unlimited Operating System Environments or Windows Servers containers with Hyper-V isolation when all physical cores in the server are licensed.

A Windows Server CAL is a license that grants access Windows Server. CALs are used in conjunction with Microsoft Windows Server OS licenses to allow Users and/or Devices to access and utilize the services of that windows server
- User CALs allow a single user access to Windows Server from an unlimited number of devices
- Device CALs allow an unlimited number of users to access Windows Server from a single device
- CALs are licensed to access servers of the same level and below. (not forward compatible)

@Dave Patrick

Hi. Thanks for your reply. Even if users are not directly accessing the server, do still they need the CAL? Also, these instances will deploy in a virtual environment. Therefore, it will use vCPUs. Is there any difference between licenses between virtual hosted server cores or physical server cores?

Your reseller's trained microsoft licensing specialist should be consulted for complex environments

Virtual machines are only activated, not licensed. Only the host is licensed, so use the core count on host when considering licensing.

@tharukan just checking if there's any progress or updates? please don't forget to mark helpful replies.

Hi Dave,
Is there any minimum number of user CAL's to be purchased with every server? I mean only my self accessing the server, then one user CAL is enough for me. Is it the right way or is there any minimum quantity? Thanks

In that case one Cal is enough.

@Dave Patrick

Thanks, Dave for your support. It save me some cost.

You're quite welcome.
